 I have a Denon DRA825 stereo receiver. I got it from my brother in law. It looks good; has real good specs; lights up when plugged in; remote changes the inputs, etc; but no sound. I'd ask my bro in law whats wrong, but he's dead. So maybe someone who knows something about these critters could tell me some possibilities? also, since it looks like all the functions work, could it be connected to a stereo amp? On the back it has 4 RCA jacks that read pre in and out. Or, is it not worth the effort?
Thanx in advance for the advice, Chuck

Start with the basic stuff.. more often than not, people with this problem overlook something rather than actually have a problem.

if it lights up, that's a good sign. check the speaker connections, if they are the spring type, alot of people (including me) have clamped down on the insulation, rather than the wire. it's not a good connection so you don;t get any sound.

check the wires at the speaker end and make sure they don't touch and short out. follow that with checking the fuses or breakers at the back of the system to see if an earlier short tripped them or blew the fuses.

look at the connections for your cd or dvd player (or whatever you are trying to liste to).. are those solidly attached ?

the next thing would be to check the front panel. is there a switch for A and B speakers ? check to make sure the switch is set to match what you wired up in the back.

check to make sure that "MUTE" isn't showing up in the display. some older models don't automatically turn mute off whne you touch the volume button.

alot of this is basic stuff, but most people miss something when they are in a hurry to play with new toys.. ;)

Thanks Leprkon for your response

I did all of the checks that you mentioned, but still no sound. Any other possibilities?
Thanx, Chuck

You say there is a set of RCA jacks with pre-out and main-in, is there anything there? There should be shorting bars between the left in and out and the right in and out (in the abscence of the bars, a standard audio cable will work), if not, that could be causing your problem.

Look at the Denon website http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1.

I looked for a DRA825 under the Discontinued Products Archive, but did not find it. Are you sure this is the correct model number? It might be to old to be on this list. The current AM/FM Stereo Receivers are listed as DRA685, DRA395, and DRA295. If yours is similar to any of these, you can download a pdf file of the owners manual.

Another possible reason you are getting no sound is a tape monitor switch. Does this receiver have tape recorder inputs and outputs with a tape monitor switch? If there is one, make sure it is switched off.

Thanks to every one

:D I strapped the pre and mains together and it's working. My bro in law had jack buttons in each hole, but were not connected. Swerd, it is an older receiver, but it has ouystanding specs; 90 w/channel RMS @ 8 ohms with THD of 0.012.
Thanks to all of you for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chuck
