Does he already have some speakers or other source components? You posted about needing speakers and here you are asking about receivers... But, if a full surround 5.1 setup is wanted, then there is more info needed!

How much time have you spent looking through the 500 other posts that ask the same question and how much reading have you done for product reviews on this site within the budget established.

What is the TOTAL budget established for this?

If it is a theater, is there a TV, DVD player, VCR (?), cable box, etc. in the room already? What type are they?

Denon & Yamaha produce great stuff, but the budget may point more towards other options or packages in an overall deal.

As stated above, you can't go too far wrong by going with either a Denon or a Yamaha that is in your price range. Other receiver brands that have a lot of adherents on this site include Onkyo, Pioneer Elite, and Harman Kardon, and then at higher price levels you start to see names like Outlaw, Rotel, etc., as well as separates.

It wasn't clear if you were talking about a budget of $700 for just the receiver, or if you were trying to get more than the receiver for that. If it is just for the receiver, then you have a fair amount of good choice.

One general point that applies to Yamaha, and maybe to other brands as well, is that units purchased from some on-line vendors may not come with a warranty that is honored by the manufacturer. So, you may have to decide between paying more at a store to get a unit with full manufacturer's warranty, or getting a better deal online and taking your chances. But, the savings can be pretty substantial, and it is one way to get a better receiver than your budget might allow otherwise.

Most of the manufacturers web sites provide a lot of useful specs and features comparisons, and usually list MSRP, so that you at least have a reference to start comparing models.

Thanks - that's some good info that people needed to really be able to steer you in the right direction. There is an excellent post on '$500.00 setups' in the speaker section of these forums that you gotta read through - great info.

I haven't done a lot of comparitive listening at that price point, so I am less help in that area.

Sounds like you need:
1. L/R Main speakers + Center channel - you already own the rear speakers.
What kind are they? How are they installed?
2. You need a subwoofer
3. You want a receiver to run everything.
4. The total budget for the receiver + 4 speakers is $700.00

Take a look at that Apex DVD player - I do not believe it has component video output which leaves you with pretty poor video quality on the DVD side of things. Fine for your old TV, but subpar with your new one. Lots of good choices for decent DVD players around $100.00

If you are in the USA, then call your cable company about getting HD cable service. It may cost a few bucks more a month, but you will be blown away by the quality. There is often DVR service offerred by many cable companies as well. Really changes the way people watch TV. Depends though - who is your cable provider, what city do you live in?

Keep the info coming and the recommendations will keep coming at you. Definitely give it at least a WEEK to do research as well. There will be a fair number of comments from us. Ask around though and go to some A/V shops in your area (cheap ones and good ones!) to listen to stuff. Like taking a car on a test drive.
