And I'm NOT drunk.

I AM a complete noob at home theater, but here is my setup/situation...

I live in a raised ranch...which means when you walk in, you have 8 steps up and 5 steps down. On one side of the stairway, I have a BIG space and 21 feet away is my couch...guess where this is going :D :D

I think I have got the system narrowed down to this...but I sure wish I had known about this site before choosing this setup.

5 Sonance s625TR Ceiling mounted speakers
1 Definitive Technologies Pro-Sub Woofer 100TL
1 Denon AVR-2087 HDMI a/v receiver
1 Samsung DVD-HD960 dvd player with HDMI
1 Universal Remote MX-900
1 Panamax Max4300EX Surge Protector

I'm up in the air about screens, but have narrowed it down to 3 choices.

1) Samsung HLS7178w 71" 1080p DLP...FANTASTIC pic, but I'd have to build a 24" shelf over my hallway in order to rest this TV on...additionally, the bottom of the screen would be even with our eye level when sitting down, and i've heard conflicting stories about how much offset you can have with this screen.

2) Panasonic 58" Plasma TH58PX600U...nice but small for viewing from 21 feet away, and can get an

3) In focus IN76 HD DLP Projector and screen...coolest of the bunch, cause the screen is wall mounted and motorized...

Any helpful suggestions gratefully accepted..abuse is not...;)

Can the Denon AVR-2807 handle the 6 ohm in ceiling speakers? I guess you are set against floorstanding / wall mounted speakers?

UPS Needed

Do I need a UPS for this system, too?

Is this for cleaning the power, or to support the system in case of an outage?

What are the ramifications of NOT having a UPS?

Thanks!

The couch is against the back wall...and since this is the main area of my SMALL house, and its also occupied by a woman, a 4.5 and 2.5 yr old...floor mounts are out...gotta be ceiling...

Some UPS's filter the power too. But most only provide battery backup in case of a power outage. You would want that if you have a front or rear projection TV. Not sure about that plasma you mentioned. I'd assume it would benefit from a UPS as well. If the power fails and you don't let the TV's internal fans cool the bulb you will shorten it's life. And some of those bulbs are not cheap. Buying a UPS up front is cheaper in the long run :D I got one.

The owners manual says A+B Front should be 8~16 ohms.

A,B Front (not sure of the difference between A+B and A,B) should be 6~16,
Center, Surround and Surround back are 6~16.

Thanks, and sorry for the multiple posts..not trying to juice my post count

A and B means you can have 2 sets of "front" speakers. Most people use the B speakers by their patio or in another room. They playback the same source as the A speakers. I think (at least in my case) the A and B speakers share the same amplifier within the receiver. So if you run both A and B then you have less power available for either set.

Since the receiver says to use 8-16ohm speaker you either have to get a different speaker, a receiver that can handle 6 ohm loads, or separate amplifier(s) for your current choice of speakers.

I am not sure what you mean by
A,B Front (not sure of the difference) should be 6~16,
Center, Surround and Surround back are 6~16.
Is this in the manual as well? Or are you referring to the speakers?

That is in the manual for the Denon AVR 2807...its on page 11 of this link...

http://usa.denon.com/AVR-2807-OM-English-EU.pdf

I think it means that if I run two sets of front speakers (I won't) that I need 8~16 Ohms...otherwise 6~16 is acceptable...

Thank you so much for your help here weasel!

Maybe...but then you probably didn't have YOU to bounce this stuff off of.

Any thoughts on the monitor?

I'm really leaning toward the motorized screen, not just for the coolness factor (which I'll admit I think is sky high) but because I'm concerned about the lil animals that live here (my two boys) playing lacrosse in teh house and shattering the screen on my plasma or DLP....

Thanks!

The Sonance will be fine from the impedance standpoint. What’s the pricing on them? You may want to rethink the Def Tech sub. For a few dollars more, an SVS PB10-NSD provides better performance. http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm

While front projection is nice, it may not be the best solution since I’m guessing you have many ambient light issues to deal with in those type homes.
