I am a new member and am ready to puchase a new receiver. I own a mitsubishi WD-65831 : 65" 1080p DLP® HDTV. I would like to keep my cost under $500. I am considering a pioneer VSX-1016TXV and a Onkyo TX-SR605. Can someone make a recommendation on which of these to buy or if there is a better receiver to consider in this price range? Thanks so much.

In the $500 price range recivers from most companies are comparable in terms of quality. Look for features and buy whichever has the most from your list of desirable features.

I would lean toward the Onkyo as it has the most current feature set. However, it would also be helpful to know which speaker you'll be powering.

BTW nice Mit set, how do you like it?

I would definitely get the Onkyo SR605, which has 2 HDMI, Dolby TruHD, DTS-HD MA---all for $400 at J&R (free S/H).

I love the Mit tv. It is incredible. I am just finishing a room and have wired it for surround sound. I was considering jbl wall speakers. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks so much.

Are you talking in/on-walls? Series and model # would help as well as the budget for speakers.

I was considering in-wall surround speakers. I am open as far as price goes. Can you give me a good recommendation? I have always been a JBL fan but am open. JBL does not list prices on their website.

JBLs are OK. I’d go with either the HT or Performance series. If you look at a specific speaker they list the MSRP. Most manufacturers now offer in-wall products. I often recommend Polks because of their great performance/buck value and ease of purchase. Are you installing 5/7.1 setup? How big is your room (L x W x H)?

I really appreciate your advice. My room is not exactly square or rectangular in shape. It is 21 feet wide, 21 feet long with 9 foot celings. I had the room prewired for 7.1 surround. I have some JBL L26 floor speakers I purchased in the mid 70's I would love to use if practical. I have pretty much decided on the onkyo sr605 receiver.

You could continue using the L26s if you wish, but timbre matching them with a current center may be difficult. Sticking w/JBL, I’d try the P35 or LC1 for a center.

Anything that fits your budget in the TC or RC line will work well. If you would like bi-polars for the sides/rears and can find them, check out the Def Tech BP/As w/UIW-55/65s for rears also.
