I currently have the boston acoustics pv7oo and I really want to upgrade. I may do two subs but I need your advice. My room is 24x15 with carpet. My choices are:

Rocket ULW10
SVS PB10-ISD
HSU STF-2

Thanks in advance for all your expert advice.

I don't think a 10in driver would be enough to cover a 24x15 room.

Furthermore, I've never heard of a 10in driver reproduce 20 hertz frequencies.

But in the list you have, I'd go HSU or SVS. Both awesome.

If you haven't heard of a 10" driver being able to reproduce 20Hz FR, chances are you haven't listened to a PB10-ISD...

I'd have to agree regarding the use of this to fill the size room noted, it may come up a bit short. If you can bump your budget up a smidge, you may want to consider one of the 25-31 or 20-39 PCi cylinders from SVS. While this isn't going to crumble your place in around you, it will likely give you some solid bass response and allow you to keep your budget somewhat reasonable. The STF-2 and ULW-10 are also good performers in this price range, but the SVS cylinders would fill that room out nicely whereas these might come up a bit short similar to the PB10... -TD

This is different. The PB-10 is TUNED to 19Hz, so it damn well BETTER reproduce those FRs.

BTW, J_Garcia had a PB-10 in a 20 by 20 room and had output to 20hz(and a bit below), it just wasn't reference level loud.

The ULW-10 is a sealed design. If the PB-10 isn't enough for that room, it sure won't be.

I would up the budget and get a 12inch driver SVS or Hsu.

Okay, it looks like everyone is in agreement that I need to step up to a 12' sub. How do you think the SVS PB12-NSD/2 $899+shipping would sound? If not, please give me your recommendations. I really want something that would sound good with HT and music. Thanks alot.

Cube,

I hear that the SVS is an awesome sub. But it's huge. I have an Hsu STF-3 that is great for HT and music that's cheaper and of a more manageable size. It fills my 24x27xVaulted room. You may want to give it a look, too.

Would you recommend these cylinders or the pc-plus for the money?

As stated my room is 24x15 with 10 foot ceilings, do you think this will work?

I am in the same boat

I have dimensions of 20' x 20' x 9' or 10'.

I was considering the same subs that you were. I also had a few others in mind and now that it seems as if I may be better off with either (2) units or a 12" sub with more power I have to also take into account the Outlaw LFM-1 for $579.00.

Does anyone have any good reviews or experiences with this? I am going to be listening to audio more so than video but when I do watch I want my wife to say "wow, I am glad we bought that!". I am curious as to how this compares against the SV PB12-NSD. They are both about the same price.

Another possible consideration I am thinking of would be to buy (2) HSU STF1 or (2) of the Av123 XSeries Subs for $200 each.

Overall, I would like to try to stay under the $600-$650 range for the subwoofer as I still need to add a number of quality components. If you look at my system now though, I think the next logical purchase is the quality subwoofer, a quality universal CD/DVD/SACD player, then the display and then the fronts, and then the center.

I have some money now and I am definitely going to be opening the wallet very soon to make a lot of these purchases.

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

That would be an extremely hard sub to beat for the money, especially seeing that SVS just came out with these new drivers, and touts them as equivalent to the previous "Plus" drivers. If you have the room, I'd recommend the NSD/2 over a cylinder. Outstanding choice in my opinion.

If you're really wanting the best of the best, I'd save up for the Plus/2 12.3 for $1199. It's probably overkill, and a bit out of budget, but keep in mind $300 (over the NSD/2) divided by the next time you'll buy a subwoofer is probably not a whole lot (on a monthly basis). ;)

As I pointed out, my room is much larger than yours and the STF-3 works great. It provides all the LFE I need. (But then, I'm not in the class of some on AH that require 120db @ 20Hz for a 15x18 room, lol! ;) ) I can rattle every wall in this house with the STF-3! Sometimes you can overkill with LFE....at least IMHO. The trade-offs are quality (clean) vs. quantity (spl/loud) vs. dollar spent (value). The STF-3, in my case at least, provides the best of the trade-offs.

Nothing against any of the SVS subs. They are reportedly very fine subwoofers. They just are bigger and costlier than I wanted, while the Hsu provides the LFE I want and need (and more!). In the price range you're looking at, these probably should be your top two manufacturers.

Happy sub hunting.

Thanks Psyopwak. I think I'm down to the HSU STF-3 or the SVS PB12
NSD/2.

Rjbudz, thanks for your suggestion. I just have to make sure I make the right choice bcause of the wife factor.

Thanks again my AH family.

Our pleasure. But if you don't get the Hsu, make sure the missus doesn't mind the freezer-sized SVS. (Mine did, lol....thus the STF-3!)
