I know VCRs are obsolete, but...

My current VCR is nearly dead. I know that VHS is dying technology, but with VCRs going for $20 on ebay it seems quite safe.

What is your recommendation for a good VCR if I can grab one at a bargain price?

If I were to buy a VCR, I would still buy a brand new one as you can still find them for $50 or so (typical 4-head HIFI vcr).

Do you have a recommendation for a model/brand?

Sorry no. The last VCR I had was a ProScan (RCA) and it was fine. I think JVC is generally considered the best for VCRs but they can be expensive relative to the competition. I saw a Samsung at Fry's for $50 and it had all the usual features.

Do you mean comparing JVC to everything else?

I think I remember seeing a model that has an S-Vid output on it. I was always curious to know if that made any difference in picture quality.

are you saying Rice Cripies are bland?

Or that the difference is really small :)

Believe it or not I still get a lot of requests for VCR's with a system JVC HR-S5902U @$199.99 JVC HR-S390U @$149.95 or HR-S2902U@129.99 Personally I would not bother installing anything below these three models ;)

If you want inexpensive and good, I would go with Panasonic. Just don't expect it (or any other brand) to be made as sturdy as some of them used to be made. And, of course, I would buy it new and make sure it was a Hi-Fi model. It should be easy to get one under $100.

Why not a VCR/DVD recorded combo? Tape is dead but if you need a VCR.

Honestly, they usually don't do either very well, so stickking to a VCR-only unit is desirable. Ray gave some examples of what re considered good quality VCRs. If you aren't up to paying that, then you can just take your pick at any store or even eBay and you'll likely be in the ballpark on quality (the $20-30 models are not that different or distinguishable in my opinion - look for features you like).
