..and it was good.
In the course of my search, I wandered into a store and found a pair of Rega R1s. The guy over there played them for me and I thought they were pretty good. I was unfamiliar with most of the recordings played (I'd parked my car far away and forgot to take my CDs), but they did not sound bright or fatiguing. Not sure if they were neutral. Good mid and high freq response I'd say.
Relatively speaking, they're very small speakers and look decent. Don't know if the surface is vinyl or wood veneer. The room was rather elaborately treated with all sorts of hanging fabrics and triangular things in the corner, so that may have contributed to the sound. None of the other speakers I had heard availed of this luxury. I am a little unsure of their bass capability. None of the recordings stressed them much in that area. But all said and done, they seem to be a reasonably good speaker.
Not that I'm considering them or anything, just thought I'd bring them up and have you people go back and forth with your opinions. As an aside, they also had Quads but the dude told me that he preferred the Regas and I didn't audition them because they were probably out of my reach anyway. So what do you guys think of the Quad 11L or 12L? I forget if the 11L has a too small woofer.
