I have no idea how to set this up...

I just purchased a Yamaha YHT-390BL system. All I really wanted to do was get some better sound going on in my room as the speakers in my TV suck. I thought this would be pretty simple, but i'm completly overwhelmed. I don't really even know what I am looking at back here. I don't watch any TV, I only play my xbox and watch movies on my Xbox (either netflix or DVDs). I have a 32" samsung LCD HD tv thats pretty new and as far as i can tell has all the bells and whistles (and i really don't know what any of them do). All I want to do is be able to get the xbox 360 to play out of speakers hooked into the receiver. Can anyone explain to me what i need to do to make that happen? Sorry for needing so much help and thanks in advance.

Ok....update..I got it working using component cables only. I used the cable that cme with my 360 and hooked that into the receiver. I then hooked the receiver to my TV with some component cables that came i think with my TV. So it works....but since i'm using comp. cabled does that mean that i'm not getting HD? Is there a better setup i should be using?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have the more recent Jasper version of the 360, or an Elite, then you could connect it through HDMI...:)

You're not exactly wrong. I can connect it through HDMI but I don't get any sound. what I've ended up with is...

360 - HDMI - receiver
360 - comp cables (that came with the 360) - receiver
receiver - HDMI - TV

So far this seems to work...I also have comp cables from the receiver to the tv but i don't actually know if those are doing anything or not (i had them attached before i figured out the HDMI bit)...just seems like everythings working so why mess with it. I guess i'm getting the picture through the HDMI and the sound through the comp.

Hi, Brandon. I believe that your new YHT-390BL system used the HTR-6130 receiver. That receiver does HDMI switching (so that you can use the receiver to select different sources), but it does not process audio over HDMI. Therefore, you can run the video through the receiver just fine. For audio, though, you'd need to use another connection - preferably a digital audio connection.

From the owner's manual on page 14:
Audio signals input at the HDMI jack are not output from any speaker terminals but output from the connected video
monitor.
To enjoy the sound from speakers connected to this unit,
–make an analog or digital connection besides the HDMI connection (see page 16).
–mute the volume of the connected video monitor.
If you need any help with setting that up, just let us know. We'd be happy to help.
