I honestly have never heard anything like that before. It would be helpful if you list what devices you have connected and via what cables.

I'm going to guess that you have only one type of audio connection (either analog or digital) from a cable box and the format of the audio for the commercials is not the type you are configured to receive. Even with digital cable you need both analog and digital connections to the receiver with the receiver set to 'auto' so it will automatically switch between them as the audio format changes.

they are hooked up through the hdmi cable from the dirct tv box to the reciever and the reciever to the samsung dlp tv.

I assume the Yamaha has a 'display' type of function that shows the format of the incoming signal. What does that show when you are watching a program and hearing audio vs when a commercial is playing and you don't hear audio?

Going way out on a limb here.
Is it possible that the shows you are watching are in 5.1 and when the commercials come on they are only in 2.0?
Check to see that you have the correct speaker selection made. That being "A" not "B", assuming you have the speaker wires connected to the "A" output.
My reasoning here is it sounds as if you are only getting sound out of your center and surrounds via straight mode, when a 2.0 signal is recieved the front speakers are not correctly selected and no sound is heard.

That's a good guess Nomo. I'm still going on the assumption that it has to do with analog vs digital, but who knows?

I didn't think of that.
Your idea does seem a bit more likely but wouldn't that mean the DirectTV box, which not at all familiar with, or the source channel would be toggling back and forth?

Now that I think about it, DirectTV is satellite and satellite is usually all digital so maybe my thought is off base and yours is sounding more like a really good possibility. With digital cable, the channels do alternate between digital and analog even on the same channel and that is what led me to think it has something to do with analog vs digital and the receiver not automatically switching between them.

You need to toggle your input format from 'Digital' to 'Automatic'.

I had the same issue myself with my 6090B

I am also having the same problem with my audio from my Motorola HD cable box (the DVD works great). Can you be more explicit in your statement about toggling between "digital" and "auto"....do I have to do that each time I lose audio (if I do, the set goes back to BB) or is this a setting I can do in the manual setup and never have to touch again?!

Setting the receiver to auto switch between analog and digital is what I was getting at in my initial replies.

Your manual should explain the procedure and it will probably be listed under something like 'digital input format'. Once you set it to Auto you don't have to change it. You must have both analog and digital connections from the cable box to the receiver.

Edit: Page 39 of the HTR-6090 manual - Audio Select.

MDS....but I'm having this problem when I switch back and forth between two channels. I'll get audio from say, CNN, then switch to NBC, lose the audio, switch back to CNN and the audio is gone from that as well. I'll select previous on the remote (back to NBC) and audio is there?!?

- Do you have digital cable?
- What connections from the cable box to the receiver are you using?
- If using digital connections, did you do the digital input assignment and Audio Select to 'Auto'?
- Does the cable box have a menu setting to specify the type of digital audio to output? [Mine has PCM and Dolby Digital].

Unless the cable box is defective, it sounds like when you switch channels the receiver attempts to identify the audio format and cannot - possibly due to settings on the cable box or incorrect digital audio settings on the receiver.

If your cable system is like mine you must have both analog and digital connections from the cable box to the receiver and you must have the audio select set to Auto.

- I do have digital cable, HD Motorola. That particular box worked perfectly fine via optical cable to my older JVC receiver. I actually tried another digital cable box, same problem.

- I'm using a optical cable, but also tried a digital coax cable, same problem.

- It is set to "Auto"

When I lose the audio I simply have to push the "Enhance" button on the receiver box and sound appears (this is the case for all channels that initially don't have sound).

I really like this receiver, much better sound than the JVC, but I'm not going to keep getting up, hit the Enhance button each and every time I can't get audio.

I emailed Yamaha, nothing heard yet.

Thank you

Having the sound disappear during commercials may be a blessing in disguise!:D

Firmware fix for 6090

I just downloaded the firmware fix for the digital audio problem encountered on my 6090....and it worked!!

The process is not that difficult to do, you just need to make a copy in .WAV format and then find a CD player with a digital output (coax or optical) to interface with the receiver. It takes about 4 minutes.

For any Canadians out there (I'm one), the Yamaha CDN site still does not have the link for the fix. You have to register on the US site and then go onto "downloads" found on the particular 6090 page.

I've sent a msg to Yamaha Canada and told them that other users are going to have the same problem that I did (especially Roger customers) and that they should let the retailers know in advance.

Anyone out there need a hand, let me know....it was frustrating as hell losing the digital audio every time I changed channel, but the fix makes it all worth while.....very impressive system.
