To be beefy requires stability into 4-ohm loads, no matter what the rated power is. You're always risking problems if you drive speakers below the minimum impedance rating of your amp. The vast majority of the time it's not a big deal, but it can mean reduced output and excessive heat.
That being said, I think the catastrophic failure you described is due to a short. I'd check your soldering very carefully. Make sure no stray wires are crossed. Your dealer may not be so accommodating it it happens again! If the wiring is all okay, then the fault probably was within the receiver. What speakers are we talking about, btw?</font>
