Long story short I finally have the extra room in my home to dedicate a small room to a theater/listening room/second living room. Every since the addition end table sized subwoofer to the living room I think the WAF has bottomed out. So I've decided to move my gear to my new room, BUT Ive been thinking about maybe upgrading my Receiver. Ive always been curious about separates but scared to take the plunge.

What do you guys think, keep ol' trusty (Onk 876), shop for a new Yamaha, or finally take the dive into separates?

I am powering a set of SVS towers and 2 Outlaw LFM-EX subs. Ive thought about getting some Salk towers at some point, but Ill prob blow the budget on new a/v gear and acoustical panels/artwork. Room size is 10x13.

Budget is somewhere south of 2k... Since I have a lot of time to plan and prep the room I can space out purchases, very high on WAF... lol

You've got 5 STS-02's? Unless you are cranking the volume, at this time I really don't think either would help you enough to justify the cost unless there's some new feature you can't live with out. But with 5 towers, yeah I would recommend some better amps should you ever find yourself in a larger space. What disc player do you have? I can honestly tell you one of my favorite upgrades was the Oppo BDP-93. You can't really appreciate the difference of what a good transport does until you can compare it side by side with what you have!

lol no, I have 2 towers, matching center and bipoles.

No features really catch my eye over what my 876 does already... MAYBE iTunes stuff and iPhone control, and thats only if i decide on a new a/v receiver. I wouldn't expect that feature from separates.

As far as media goes... Ill probably be using a PS4 and AppleTV... Ive also been searching for a used Yamaha S1800 for hires audio and hard media playback.

I have not viewed movies on a PS4, but on the 3 it was a painfully apparent difference in video quality. If you do not already own an AppleTV, or would like to add Netflix and others to the library, as the Oppo Players can network.

I'm not an Oppo salesman, but it sounds like you've got some cash burning a hole in your pocket, and for what you already have, I think this would offer the most significant upgrade for $500. And I'm sure you can find plenty of my generation 93 used, vs. the new 103, if you really want to extend your budget.

Why not take that 2K and make your new room a music only room? :D Leave the HT where it is, buy a nice set of subs, nice set of bookshelfs, a nice preamp and an amp... then you can add a cd player, dac, ect later on down the road, maybe one of them new Dirac systems from mini dsp, some treatments where they are needed... Put a little bar in there, NO TV, maybe some old brass instruments to decorate the walls, a couple old guitars, some beatles gold album replicas, a really nice coffee machine {this is an awesome deal La Pavoni Stradivari ESC 8 Espresso Machine Dated 19 09 2013 | eBay } I dream of a room like this someday, four walls maybe a single window, not open to the rest of my house, just all alone and secluded, I would buy my dream system, the biggest most comfortable loveseat I could find {not too big where other people could fit, just for me}, then I would put a nice bar behind the loveseat with my coffee machine, 20 different whiskies, and a drawer full of stuff I shouldn't eat...
