Yesterday we had a long day so when we were going to bed my wife asked if I wanted to put music on instead of the tv, we normally set the sleep timer and fall asleep to the tv then it shuts itself off.. She knows I would much rather have the music on than the tv, but the problem is NO SLEEP TIMER, so I have to get up and turn it off so the tubes aren't glowing all night and catch fire or something, now go to sleep in silence, and it will never happen because my brain will be all over the place, thinknig about 4 million different things, Ill never fall asleep with no noise...

So, after thinking about it for a minute, I ran down stairs grabbed a digital plug timer from my garage and plugged it into the power strip that powers the tube amp and the turntable... I grabbed pink floyd "the wall" {side 3} and added up the minutes, started the timer a minute or so shy so the end didn't scratch and wake us up, I started the album and fell asleep to the music playing nice and low, tubes glowing, and record spinning, I woke up this morning and the album was stopped as if the power went out and everything was off, needle still on the album... PERFECT...

I am going to do it again tonight, she will be asleep because i watch tv until from 9 to 11 on sundays, but before I lie down I am going to get it all set, I am going to time it so when the leftovers on HBO ends the system fires up and plays until the album is through... This would be impossible with a solid state or cd player since you would nee dot press play, but I think the table will do it, if I have it all setup...

Maybe you should get a little PC and set it up as a music server. Queue up your playlist, and set the PC to shut down once the set is done. That way you do not have to have everything timed like a bank heist. A PC as music server wouldn't cost very much. You can get 2 TB drives for $80 these days, and it would be easy to quiet components. You can get a low noise sound interface very cheaply nowadays, believe me that hasn't always been the case. Use the TV in your bedroom as the PC display.

That would be cool but the bedroom system is kind of sacred, lol its 90% ambiance, fire up the tube amp, the album is spinning, lights are dim, that popping hissing sound coming through the speakers with some good "old" music....
I supposed I could just throw an ipod on my alarm clock dock and it will play and shut off when the playlist is over, but what fun is that?
