I feel stupid asking this, but...

If you have only a 5.1 speaker set-up in your theater and you now own a 7.1 preamp, where should the rear speakers get plugged in? Back left and right, or surround left and right? The rears are behind the listening area and are bipolar. They've sounded amazing on my old 5.1 receiver.

Thanks.

Hook them up to the surround left and right as thats where they should be placed too, so they are sitting to your left and right. The back surrounds are for 7 speaker set ups.

As already stated surround L/R is the correct hook up for a 5.1 system. It is also acceptable to have these speakers behind you, just as you’ve done with your past setup. Just make sure that your preamp/receiver knows you are using a 5.1 system, so that it routes the signals accordingly.
