i didnt know where to turn to...

Hey audioholics, I'm a beginner here, and thought this was the place (beginner section) to ask for help...

This is actually my final effort to try and resolve my problem, i have actually tried everything, and initially asked Bestbuy (the place i bought my tv from ) for help... but as a mediocre, not knowing-anything, newbie on this whole home theatre thing, i didnt understand anything and was reluctant to follow what they told me to do and buy for I was afraid of getting 'taken advantage of' for not knowing anything. After countless days of headace, confusion ( im gonna cry :( ), i just didnt know who to turn to, i spent a good day or two researching in the net... and found this site (wouldnt hurt to try).

I waS planning to buy a new hdtv and i didnt know where to start. so i went to bestbuy and looked for tvs with a budget of 1500$. I asked one of the staff, and they told me about giving me agreat deal on this 50HM66 toshiba dlp, for 800$ but the catch was the tv was their demo tv,and iguess they wanted to clear it out or something i dont know. and soo i was like ok 800$ dats good i cud return it later on if i didnt want it.. and so i bought it. they told me that they'll give me 4 year plan for free, and told me to buy the stand also which was like 300$ because they said the tv will most likely fall from my own pre-maid stand at home (small wood cabinet thing) and they also told me that if i wanted good quality picture, to buy these.. monster cable hdmi thingy and optical wire that costed 500$ put together.. at first i was amazed at how these little wire thingy cost... i couldve bought myself a 360 with those.. but with a promise from the staff that i wouldnt regret it i juss tok it in. in the endd i ended up paying a little over 1900$ for what was supppoose tocost 800$..

And so when i got home i hooked up with my hd box and al and found out that my reciever and dvd player didnt have d hdmi and optical input. nontheless the quality of picture the tv was giving wasntt great at all.. hd programs dont even look like theyre hd.. and some of the "normal" channels looked better than the hds.. they whre blurry and dark.. Frustrated, i call best buy to make an arrangement of returning it because it felt like i made a mistake. after a little arguement they told me that i cant return it cuz i have just signed a deal of buying the demo tv for keeps... (imsorry for such a long life story.. i guess yhou guys didnt need that.. )

Defeated.. i have shifted my entire focus from trying to return it into, actually trying to make it better myself. is it because im not using the hdmi cables thatit looks blurry? oh and i forgot o mention that the cable issplitted trhough out the house from basement to 6 rooms. so could that be the problem? or that toshiba 50hm66 just isnt the highquality picture type of tv??? pleasee.. im likee dyinggg over here.. i dont know wat to do anymore.. please help me out!

My suggestion is go return the TV and all the cables. They made you waste your money on monster cables (check out monoprice.com or bluejeanscables.com for the real prices of HDMI cables) so atleast return the cables. Are you sure you are actually getting HD signals? Many people think they are but aren't really.

well the way my cable company does it is by having a group of channels as HD

What kind of cables are you using to hook it up then? Composite, DVI or Component?

Well composite cables won't carry a signal higher than 480i so I would look into at least getting component. That should help the image issues.

Sounds like you aren't connecting them properly then. Make sure you are using the proper connections when you do so (not mixing them up).

At least take the cables to customer service, and kick, scream, and yell till they take those back. And the $300.00 stand too. Unless you like the stand. Now, lt's time to break out the Toshiba book, and your HD source book.

Somewhere in your TV and HD Source setup menu, you might need to set it up, or tell it that you want to use 720p and/or/maybe 1080i. My HD Directv uses an USB cable for HDMI, so maybe your TV and HD source hook up that way. Try not to use RCA cables, or composite video. http://bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi/index.htm read this page.

I hope I have not confused you! You may have a low signal if your splitting six ways. Try it with no splitters directly to your HD source, and see if that might be a problem.

Good Luck, and keep us up to date! Everybody is here to help.

Return the cables and buy online.

I don’t know anything about the TV but I took a quick look online and I'm sure that once you get it all hooked up properly and you really watching > 720P programming, you'll be happy with it.

I though the warrantees were the money maker? Why would they have done that for free?

avasefri, Gimpy, thanks for giving me some insights into this, and jake, i guess just to by me in, cuz i am buing a demo tv, thats been used everyday for prolly a year already, and plus they had me pay 1900$ anyway so forgetting rid of a tv like that i guess it was worth it for them

The best bet really would be returning everything you purchased. If they tell you that you can't return it go in and talk to someone as high up the chain as you can at the actual store. Explain that you were specifically told you would be able to return the TV.

GImpy ric, I have been trying to find that option of setting it up to 720, and spent atleast 5 h ours reading the setup book, but it doesnt say anything about that. I also read sumthing somewhere, (correct me if im wrong) that by using rca composite cables, im giving the signals a 480i cap, because thats the max they can operate on or somehthing like that???

Yes, like I told before you need to switch to component cables or you won't get any resolution higher than 480i.

avasefri if i did try to do that i know, that itll prolly end up with a big mess, trrying to convince the higher-ups, because their main goals are prolly business, also.. after that, then wat?? where am i going to rebuy my hometheatre equipments, seeing that this bessbuy store was the largest store thats atleast 30 min away from my area. and as far as buying online goes, ive never really bought anything online, and im reluctant into buying something over the net at that price range.

thnx for the guide on connections, i read it and it seems to me taht the best connections availabeare the hdmi ones preferably dvi-i...as far as the tv goes... i guess i just dont know if the tv i have is what an average hdtv in the market would be like in terms of picture and features. in simpler terms that if other tvs are like this then maybe theres no point in trying to get another one. the quality however is so bad that my oldschool, crt tube 13 inch tv looks better than the hd channels on the "hd tv". well its not really bad...its descent i guess.. but i thought with the technology availabe now... that maybe it'd be better. well im juss being biased, basing my thoughts using only this 50hm66 toshiba dlp... BUT u never knwo maybe it is just the connections, or just that fact that its a demo tv and there might be something wrong with it...

I also bought my TV online without a problem. Shipping took like 3 weeks though.

You guys don’t think $800 and 4yr warranty was an ok deal for a TV that’s probably much better then what he’s running now? Maybe in a couple of years the TV can “break” and he can have it replaced.

When I bought my four year warranty, the said that if they can't fix my discontinued tv, they would replace it with the same size current model :)
