I could use some advice (Onkyo SR607)

I have an Onkyo SR607 that has started overheating and occasionally not working at all (that would be right now). This may be related to a recent electrical storm. My question is, is it worth looking into repairing it and where would I find a reputable repair shop (near Pittsburgh, PA).

This is my first post here, while not exactly a complete noob with regards to home theater, I am more into watching and listening rather than setup. i really have never had any items of this type repaired before so I thought I'd defer to some expertise. Lastly, my least desire would be to drop $400 again for a new one. On the other hand I don't want to spend $150 polishing a turd, if that's what it really is.

Thanks for any info.

Have you checked your speaker connections, both ends, to make sure you have no shorting "whiskers?"

Do you have enough ventilation round the unit?

If you have good ventilation and there are no shorts, then it is hard to recommend repair or recycling on a two year old unit in that low price range.

There quite likely is at least one output stage breaking down. So repairs more likely than not will run half the cost of the new receiver at least. The unit has been over heated setting the stage fro further problems down the road.

What are your speakers? It is possible this low price point unit is not up the task of driving your particular speakers.

If you buy new, then I would recommend purchasing a unit at a higher price point. You really can't build a complex receiver like that, that is any good at that price point.

Remember the most expensive purchases you make are junk, as you are finding out.

Next time go at least to the mid price point or a little above of a manufacturer's range, such as the Marantz range for instance.

Onkyblow are known to run hot, which is not a good thing in electronic components.

well, it has been functioning for a while now. I have a fan blowing on it. It is not optimal, but certainly saves me a few bucks until I am ready.

If the fan is doing the trick, you just bought yourself some time. My present 503 and my previous 600 [both used, bought dirt cheap] run hot also. it's an Onkyo thing.
