Right now I am running the Denon DVD-1800BD blu ray player and connecting it to the Onkyo TX-NR905 using an hdmi cable. When ever I run a blu ray dvd (like X-Men:The Last Stand), the Onkyo displays something thats not true 7.1. On the left side of the 905's display where there are the little boxes, the boxes that are lit up are FL, FC, FR, SR, SL, LFE, and SB but the SB box is in the back center.

Does this mean that the back left and right are matrix from one source? How can I get it so the display lights up the SBL and SBR instead of having only one box in the back center?

Hi. It could just be the example disc that you sighted, but the soundtrack in X-Men: The Last Stand is 6.1. That would explain the display for that movie. I'd just suggest that you make sure that the discs that you are playing have 7.1 soundtracks. You might not be doing anything wrong at all.

Oh I didn't even realize that. Thank you for the quick response.

Here are two very recent 7.1 Blu-Ray titles (both from Disney):

The Nightmare Before Christmas has 7.1 Dolby TrueHD
Sleeping Beauty has 7.1 DTS-HD MA

More?

3:10 to Yuma has 7.1 PCM so even the crappiest profile 1.0 standalone can play it.

The Golden Compass has 7.1 DTS-HD MA.

"Hannah Montana" also has 7.1 DTS-HD MA.

Do you know of any movies that are recorded in 7.1 DTS-HD MA that have a really good audio soundtrack with a lot of action?

Damn, I spent 10 minutes copying/pasting/editing/typing/getting this post together, and I accidentally closed the window. Grrrr.

6.1 titles. The first three are PCM, Shinobi is TrueHD, and the rest are DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-MA.

Crank
The Descent

Disturbia
Face/Off
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

Lord of War

7.1 titles. I took the time to denote DTS-MA with an *

Others, maybe 11, are PCM. Of MA, 16 are 24bit. Of these, 2 are 96 khz and they are the two classical music titles. :)

Use one of the matrixing modes. Like Pliix, Neo6, or THX modes I think*.

Matrixing from one source? Not sure what the question means, but its not a cheap parlor trick. Algorithms are used to take certain audio information away from sides to be used in the rears, when going from 5.1 to 7.1 for instance. I imagine that a 6.1 to 7.1 wouldn't do anything but simply replicate the rear in both rear speakers? A guess.

When you have X-men3 on, nevermind what the lights are telling you... do you hear audio from both speakers?

cheers.

not like in the 80-90s with the original pro logic, that was a cheap parlor trick:D
