I can’t stop changing my mind

Ever spend too much time reading about audio equipment thinking that you have found the right next thing only to read another review and get thrown off track. I miss college and my early twenties when I could go to a shop or visit a friend and listen to music and experience hifi up close and personal.

Sadly it's getting harder to audition gear in person but on the flip side we did not have access to forums like this one with so many knowledgeable people happy to share advice.

analysis paralysis... decision paralysis... and then there is the fear of making a big purchase, often followed by a fear of buyers remorse.
;)

What equipment are you considering that has you in a quandary?

Right now I am looking at integrated amps or any amp that will sound good in a small room. Would like to have the option of a sub and Bluetooth. Lots of options in the 400-600 range. Especially when you add in used or discontinued. But then again do I really need to replace my 25 year old entry level techniques receiver? And what type of amp do I like? Warm, cool, boosted, slightly elevated treble……‍

I've heard that Viagra makes you elevated.

What does the unit need to do with a sub, just have a full range pre-out as so many integrated amps do? BT/wifi is nice but more avr territory than most integrated amps. Then again what's the Technics receiver you have not doing? Shopping by "amp sound" can definitely lead to indecisiveness if you believe all you read in that regard, as you will definitely find differences of opinion (personally if its a good amp it has no "sound" of its own).

Sounds like a nice Denon AVR X3*** or higher would be a great place to look for your needs. Even though the AVR will have more channels than you need, it includes all the other bells and whistles many integrated amps tend to lack. There's always the well regarded Outlaw RR2160 stereo receiver with Bluetooth and bass management, but it's about $400 over your top end.

One thing about a lot of reviews nowadays is you can find a good one on any product anymore no matter what the reality is so it's hard to put much stock into anything (well, except for here, of course!) but measurements and specs. I don't put much into subjective comments like warm, bright, buttery, chocolatey, yeasty... whatever. The thing is, its a mature technology and today's major players are are all making some really neutral, accurate amplification. Meaning a lot of those fuzzy descriptors and subjective comments are often just marketing fluff and/or cognitive bias, imo. With accuracy being the goal, there really shouldn't be any audible differences aside from different eq or room correction, etc. I look at specs, features, reliability and compatibility with my gear.

I say look for deals and buy from reputable manufacturers, make sure it has the power and features you need and take the plunge. I like @Shanman's suggestion for something like a Denon AVR X3***. They're great receivers and have lots of flexibility, especially if you plan to incorporate a sub, which I recommend, but availability is kinda spotty lately... Marantz (SR series) and Yamaha (Aventage series) are usually highly recommended as well.

Find something you can audition and send back. Many places offer this option, possibly with a small cost if you aren't crazy about them.
