Just zoomed in on Dorian's projected track. The centre passes right over my next door neighbour's house tomorrow afternoon. Glad I don't live there.:p

P.S. Uh-oh. They just upgraded it from cat 1 to cat 2 by the time it reaches us. The NATO fleet arrived yesterday for a port visit, but sailed again this afternoon in advance of the storm. They will be standing offshore, but will stay in the area in case they are needed.

Best of luck man, hope no lives are lost! And property damage to a minimum.

I was in Jacksonville earlier this week. Looked bad at first but stayed out in the Atlantic. Best of luck.

You can easily change Dorian's path with a Sharpie pen .

Maybe you can do the same for those storm category ratings too :D.

in case they are needed.

Like in case of attack? What else could you need them for?

If they pulled out, that means your area is gonna get it but good.

Let's be safe. Unplug your equipment. ;)

They can supply power from their ships' generators. Their helicopters can conduct evacuations and search and rescue. Use your imagination there, Tatiana.

Not to mention medical assistance and evacuation of victims .

I never thought of the military rescuing ... well, anybody.

It's cool that Nato is willing to let people charge up their iPhones if their power goes out though.

edit: but seriously, good luck today

Seriously, I have no life.
That's so cute- worried about a Cat 1 storm going to Cat 2. My friend was at his condo in Treasure Cay on Abaco when it passed through as a Cat 5 at walking speed (about 6 feet/second) with wind gusts up to 220MPH. It passed directly over his place and he couldn't communicate with his wife between 11:30AM Sunday and late Wednesday afternoon. True to form, he was seen on CNN, helping the Coast Guard evacuating people in need.

Joke all you want, the US has never had that kind of destruction from a hurricane and places like New Orleans suffer by design, by being below sea level.

The fact that they might still have something that could need power says something about what they're expecting- Abaco has areas that were wiped flat, where everything was destroyed. I was surprised to see the number of buildings that survived.

I'm not worried about my family's personal safety. That said, while cat 2 isn't close to cat 5, it's not nothing. We won't experience anything like what the Bahamas received, but there will be damage. Hurricane Juan was a cat 2 and it caused a lot of damage here. Some houses in my neighbourhood were stripped of siding, but mine is brick construction. I have some concern about the large trees surrounding my house, as Juan put a large branch through my roof - which I discovered when rain water started dripping from a ceiling light fixture. I'm not concerned about flooding, as I'm on high ground and I sealed the foundation and fixed the drainage a few years ago.

We'll see how it goes. The wind is starting to pick up and is expected to hit in force later this afternoon.

God luck- weather can be a biatch.

My friend and his wife bought a condo in Treasure Cay a few years ago and occasionally rent it- had a Swiss couple this year and they couldn't get a flight off of the island, so they all hunkered down and waited it out. Bill is certified to operate fairly large watercraft (somewhere in the 5000 ton range), so safety near water is something he knows well- his wife was on a local news report and she said he took the Swiss couple to the 2nd floor with life vests that have lights, whistles and other safety gear. He took their boat down from Milwaukee two years ago, so he had to be prepared- just saw it in a Tampa Bay Times video on YouTube, so I sent the video to his wife. The boat looks intact, although it's on the ground and not on stands- don't know if it was laid down before the storm but somehow, it looks like most of the other boats in the yard are OK.

The wind is still gradually picking up - supposed to peak around suppertime. There have been a lot (1000+) power outages reported already. So, if/when we lose our power, we may be waiting a while for restoration.

The reports from the Bahamas are horrific. I know we won't have it that bad, so I consider ourselves fortunate.

LOL!
I totally thought you were just messing around!
Down here in Ga. hurricanes in Canada don't exist (not enough to ever hear about it on the news, and I do not watch the weather channel)!
But even in GA, I largely associate hurricanes with south of me! Sandy was a fluke!!!

Lost power about an hour ago.
According to the internet, stuff in the fridge is good for 4 hours if you keep the door closed and stuff in the freezer is good for 24 hours (48 if your freezer is stuffed).
I lost power for about 8 hours earlier this year, but I just had fruit, juices, condiments, butter and cheese in the fridge so I ignored the 4 hour limit. I'd probably worry about leftovers, especially meat first.

Power is still out, but the worst of the wind has passed. We have no damage, but my brother-in-law's street is blocked with toppled trees. A crane on a highrise under construction downtown was knocked down, but I don't think there were any casualties. As I mentioned earlier, I was concerned about the trees around my house, but I think we'll be OK now. My major concern now, is the fridge and freezer.

We've been playing card games by candlelight aaaalllll day and I'm completely done with that. Time for bed. With luck, the power will be on in the morning.

Did not look good on the news. As you know I was there in the Spring of last year. Halifax weather looked pretty severe on our evening news tonight. I see they have pulled Mid Atlantic Ferries until Monday in the Straight of Cabot.. They don't pull them very often! We came back from Port Aux Basques in a Beaufort 7 blow. I have to say the ship took it very well.

Hope you get the power back soon. A long power cut is a real PITA.

Good luck with riding out that power failure. It can try your patience.

I have an all too clear memory of my own experience with Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The weakened storm passed through my area without major harm, except for lost electrical power. It seems many power line transformers blew, and the local power company had little or no supply on hand. My neighborhood had no electricity for over 5 days. We struggled with finding ice to try and keep refrigerated and frozen food from spoiling, but after about 2 days we gave up on that. We had natural gas for cooking and hot water, but no lights, internet, computers, or air conditioning.

To make matters worse, that whole week, the weather was hot & humid. I remember going to bed as soon as it got dark, sleeping poorly because it was too warm, getting up at sunrise to go to work where electricity was available. At least there, and in my car, I could enjoy air conditioning.

A lot of people were furious at the electric power company. Local politicians, who smelled blood in the water, led the charge against it. Within a year, that company was sold and put under new management.
