Humming sound from speakers/Eltax avr-200 Amplifier

Hi Everyone
Ive just joined this site today,im from the Uk and I wish all of you a Happy New Year!!

Im hoping someone can help me out with this problem I have with my Amp/speakers(the problem only started yesterday!! There seems to be a low humming sound coming from the speakers and when I disconnect all the speakers the humming sound disappears!

Im not sure what has happenend? does this mean I will have to go and buy a new Amp?
The amp itself is roughly 6 yrs old,and it has been in good working order ever since.
I have tried changing the speakers,but I still get the same humming sound

Welcome. Is it freezing there?

You need to do some troubleshooting.
1st. Do you have cable TV in any way connected to the audio setup either direct connection or indirect via the TV? If so, disconnect it totally at the wall
and see if that hum is still there as you might have a ground loop hum which is mostly caused by cable TV.

2nd. If no cable TV or it still hums, disconnect the inputs to the amp. What is connected to it, CD, record player, DVD? Is it is still humming?

All the speakers? One?

Does the hum vary in loudness as you adjust the volume control?

Thankyou so much for both your replies!!

the weather wasnt too bad over the christmas period, but apparently we are gonna have some very cold weather coming our way here the next few days(according to the very nice weather man lol )(minus 8! )so we will all have to get our wooly jumpers out....

basically,when I have disconnected everything,there is still the humming sound coming from the speakers and the humming gets louder as you add more speakers(after you have disconnected them one by one)
before we had this trouble with the humming,we had our dvd player and Sky(Sky is our satellite tv) connected to the amp,and it was all in working order,just cant understand what is wrong?

im sorry,I forgot to say that it is a 5.1 prologic system(5 speakers and 1 subwoofer)

You indicate that this hum wasn't there before so what changed in connections when the hum started, anything? Nothing?
If you disconnect the sub from the receiver by the sub interconnect/coax going to it, still hums?
Did you disconnect the Sky TV cable both video and audio going to the TV and/or the receiver? Still hums?
You may have a defective receiver if it still hums.
Can you test with another receiver by borrowing from a friend?

Ground loop

This has to be a ground loop.

Disconnect everything from the receiver, including the powered sub, but not the non powered speakers. Disconnect the satellite from the SKY box. Disconnect any aerials and other RF sources.

Does it still Hum? If it hums with JUST the receiver mains plug connected and and the speakers less the sub, then the receiver if faulty.

Now connect the sub. Does it hum? If it does connect the mains lead of the sub to the same outlet and circuit as the receiver. Does it still hum?

Now plug back each peripheral to the receiver checking for hum with each connect. If you get hum pull out the RCA plug from that unit and proceed. Make a note of which if any units hum.

Finally connect the coax from the satellite to your SKY box. Then any other RF connections you might have.

Let us know what hums. If you are careful and methodical, and carry out this plan exactly, you will get to the bottom of it.

So not sure exactly what transpired.

This would be a most unusual receiver fault. You would have to suppose the power supply has lost smoothing and then you would have distortion as well as hum. I just have to feel there are more than two grounds connected somehow. We need to be absolutely certain the hum is present with only one ground at the receiver, and only the speakers connected, not the sub, which could well be providing the extra ground.
