Humming Noise on Celestion Subwoofer (Help Please)

Hello....

I've had my 5.1 setup for a long time. I am a big time Audio/Videophile but I cannot figure this out. I've had this system of a Denon receiver and 5 Celestion high-quality speakers I bought in a packaged-deal at an "Ultimate Electronics" store at cost for around $2,000 (knew the head manager). Oh yeah, it also has a subwoofer.

I bought this setup probably 3 years ago. I have always loved it. Since my huge subwoofer (and heavy, too) box was in a bad place to locate, it was always left on.

Well, for the last year, literally, whenever it's on, within minutes it will start making this humming noise.

It has two knobs on it for which I can turn to change the 'setting' for - they are called "Crossover Frequency" and "Phase Adjust." I've been very lazy in trying to get this problem fixed so I've just lived without my subwoofer for a year and I'm finally fed-up enough to the point I'm hear asking for help.

What's strange is, when the noise starts to hum (and no it's not a high pitched noise and no the woofer certainly isn't blown), if I adjust those two knobs the humming sound can get higher or lower, but no matter what it stays there, loud enough you can always hear it, so I never turn on my subwoofer anymore.

For weeks I've been toying with the idea of taking my Subwoofer enclosure apart and finding some kind of short or maybe a grounging issue or loose cable and/or connection somewhere.

Is this possible?

What in the world is it and since I know it isn't a blown woofer (as even with the humming it still outputs undistorted bass beautifully)?

Surely it's something I can fix by opening up the box. Obviously being a few years old there's no warranty, but I desperately want it working again as a 5.1 setup just isn't as good as it should be without the subwoofer! Whether I'm watching Gladiator in DTS or Shrek 2 in DD5.1, I'm missing out on good bass.

Anyone have any ideas?

Please, please help. I cannot afford to buy a new one and it's not "broken" as it still outputs bass beautifully but just hums. I'd hate to have to post in 10 other A/V forums to get an answer.

On a side note, the last week my monitor has started to make a high pitched noise on my computer 50% of the time it's on and that's very annoying, too, but I've encountered that before and there's really nothing you can do about it.

But this post is about my subwoofer for my 5.1 setup. Please help!

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,
Jeremy H. in Oklahoma

PLEASE reply with any help and/or tips

*BUMP*

I really need some help. I can't believe no one has replied at all. Even if you don't KNOW a precise reason for the noise, surely you can help me out in giving me some sort of suggesstion or many other things.

Ok, ok, ok, ok. I solved the hum problem on my HSU VTF-2 by using a cheater plug and have had no hum for the past 5 years. That will be $25 please, no refunds..... Next!

Same exact problem.

Jeremy,
For what it's worth, I have the EXACT same problem with a Celestion Sub that I bought about three years ago from Ultimate Electronics. And, of course, I'm in the same boat as far as the warranty is concerned. Did you have any luck with Nick's suggestion to use a cheater plug?

Kevin
