I connect my gear through a Monster Power line conditioner/surge protector. I had my cd player disconnected because I was using its power cord to power my tv until I received a longer power cable and now when I connect the cd player there is a buzz/hum that is heard throughout the entire system. Moving the volume up and down does very little to the sound but putting it in mute completely eliminates it. If I'm not mistaken, there are 2 pieces that have 3 prong plugs, the tv and the cd player. What could it be? Thanks

Sounds like a ground loop. Unplug things one at a time until you eliminate it, at least then you can be sure of the offending piece of equipment. After that, try to plug the offending equipment into a different wall circuit and see if that fixes it. Others can give you more detailed answers.

I had a ground loop in my system coming from the cable. Ended up having to use a ground loop isolator on the cable coming into the house.

Is your TV connected to your receiver with RCA cables? (either for audio or video?)

My ground loop hum came into the cable box, and passed through the the receiver via the component (RGB) cables sending video to my receiver. It didn't start until I added a power amp to the system that used a 3 prong plug.

If all units are grounded on the same power bar, then there should be no ground loop there, it'll be on your incoming cable. Try leaving your entire system hooked up, but disconnect the incoming cable from your tv or cable box. If the hum goes away, you need a ground loop isolator.

Mine was about $25 from a place in toronto (tin-lee electronics)...

Good luck!
