I recently got some excellent Marantz MA500 monoblock amps (Thanks Seth_L) and hooked them up a couple of days ago.

I notice a hum in the center speaker when the amp is powered on but the receiver isn't.

I swapped amps; cables; the socket in the surge protector that it was plugged into and still the hum is there.

Being as it disappears when I turn the receiver on; should I be concerned?

Thanks.

What do you have the gain on the amp set to? Amps do tend to have some level of hum, but typically should not be audible from your seating position IMO. If you hear it only when up close, then I'd say normal. I never noticed it with my MA500s, but my PM7000 did it and so does my PM7200.

I don't believe these amps have a gain setting.

Can't see one anyway :)

I have to get within a couple of feet of the speaker to hear the hum.

It has been almost a year since I had them. Just looked at Seth's pics and it doesn't look like there is a gain adjust. If they are quiet with nothing playing, then I wouldn't worry about it.

That's what I figured.

I need to re situate all my equipment so as to minimize the number of wires overlapping each other and to cut out unnecessary wires.

I also have some better interconnects coming than the cheap things that came with a piece of equipment I bought about 10 years ago. :D

After the holidays I'll get on to it.

Thanks for your help.

Get a cheater plug- definitely a ground loop issue.

Plug the amps into power that doesn't go through the surge protector. These amps probably draw more current than the protector can handle and may limit current to them. .

Many time people faces this Hum problem in the speakers. There can be many reasons behind this. First, you should check that the plug is proper plugged in and should be plugged in separate switch or socket. if still there is a hum sound then must be problem in speakers then , you 'll have to consult with vendor.

I don't know why everyone here likes to hum in their speakers. Does that create some sort of neat dissonant effect?

Speakers don't hum unless they have an amplifier built into the cabinet and even then, it's not the speakers, it's the amplifier or crossover.
