Hum and Buzz question

I recently noticed (could have been there from day one) a slight hum emanating from the back of my Vizio VP42. It is barely noticible especially when sound is playing.

The buzz is not coming from any of the speakers.

I checked out this article but I do not have cable television and the article seems to be saying it should come from the speakers.

Currently I have a wii, dvd player, hdtv antenna and the tv all connected to a Belkin PF60 (yes, the tv is in the proper plug). I tried just plugging the tv into the wall and the same sound comes from it.

The PF60 says the wiring and the ground are both in check and I also bought a plug tester which says everything is good.

Is this normal? if not how should I fix it.

You indicated it is not coming from the speakers. You know this because you listened to the speakers and even turned the volume all the way down, right?

Then, it is a mechanical problem in the tv, possibly a transformer?
With the volume all the way down on the tv and other components off, you need to move your ears close to the set and move around, see if you can isolate it to a section, a quadrant, whatnot. If it is under warranty, if may need to go back.
Also, you may want to move your hand on the frame and press on it as you are moving your hand around to cover the whole are to see if there is some part that is vibrating and can be stopped by some pressure.

So I did exactly what you said. Turned the tv on with the volume on 0 and started listening. The sound seems to be coming from the top/back of the tv. It is still very slight and is coming from internal components not vibrations. When I turn the tv off the sound gets louder for half a second then the tv turns off.

I am assuming plasmas are supposed to run perfectly quiet and I should take it back now or is there something else I should do?

That's what I'm thinking. Are there vents up there? You might want to take a closer look inside if possible.

I took a much closer look at the system, tried using a flashlight to see anything inside the vented metal and I could not see a single fan in the areas I think the sound is comming from. The more I listen to it the more it sounds like metal is resonating while the TV is on, it really didn't sound like a fan.

Also the closer I listened the more it sounded like the sound was coming from the top two back corners of the TV and not from anywhere else.

Not sure how quiet a plasma should be. A call to a service center, perhaps, if there is a fan there or in that area? Not the maker as the customer support would not know such detail.

If a friend has a plasma, try to listen to it.
