HTR-6230 Help with Directv H25-700 and Digital sound

I'm a novice, so please bear with me. I have a Directv H25-700 satellite receiver connected to my Yamaha HTR-6230. The TV video is connected to the 6230 via the HDMI connection. The audio is connected via red/white RCA connections to the red/white DTV/CBL on the 6230. If I'm correct, this is analog sound, but necessary because the HDMI on the 6230 does not carry sound.

I want to try digital sound. The satellite receiver has coax/digital output and the 6230 has optical input. So I have a Coaxial (RCA) to Optical Toslink Digital Audio Converter from Monoprice as others on this forum suggested. I've have now connected the coax/digital sound from Directv to the optical DTV/CBL on the 6230. But no sound!

What settings do I need to change on the 6230 to get digital sound?

Any help is appreciated.

You don't need the Monoprice box since the 6230 has a coax input.

On the Direct TV box make sure coax output is enabled and Dolby Digital 5.1 is output.

Owner Manual Pg, 33: On the Yamaha, go to 2 Input Menu, then A) Input Assign. For the setting, IN (1) (Coaxial Jack): DVD, cycle the setting to whichever one corresponds to your Direct TV HDMI.

That should to it.

When I go to the setting In (1) DVD and then cycle the setting, my only options are DVD, MD/CD-R, DVR, V-AUX, DVD. The Direct TV HDMI uses the DTV/CBL input.

The manual unequivocally says that DTV/CBL should be an option.

I'm assuming DTV/CBL is not assigned to IN 2 or IN 3. If it is assigned to a different input, it is not going to be available. If it is, remove it and try IN 1 again.

A different approach if that doesn't work:
Go to DTV/CBL Input so that your cable show is playing. On the remote, hit 'Amp' and then 'Audio Sel' till IN 1 is selected. That should work but I'm not sure if the setting will hold after power off.

That was it! DTV/CBL was assigned to IN 2. After removing it, I was able to assign it to IN 1. Thanks for the help, agarwalro. I now have "perfect" surround sound.

Ok, here's another one for you. I also have a WDTV box attached. It's connected to the Yamaha HTR-6230 via the HDMI DVD port. The sound is directed via optical to the (2) DTV/CBl. Everything is assigned properly and I get sound ok, I just don't get digital sound. It just comes across as 2-channel stereo. The WDTV is set to broadcast digital. No matter what I do I can't get the center speaker to show up. Doe's that simply mean that the movie file is not broadcasting digital.

There are are a few possibilities.
1. If the PCM light on your receive comes on, the WDTV settings are not correct.
2. Movie/file is not 5.1. You need to play something that is confirmed 5.1.
3. The Yamaha is using HDMI audio (which the WDTV always outputs as stereo) instead if the optical. In this case, try the following,

Go to DVD Input so that your WDTV 5.1 recorded show is playing. On the remote, hit 'Amp' and then 'Audio Sel' till Optical 2 is selected.

1. OK, so we're not getting audio via Optical. On the WDTV, go to Setup then Audio Options. Select 'Digital Pass Through via Optical...'. In the next menu, confirm that AAC and WMA are unchecked and Dolby Digital and DTS are checked.
2. Does Netflix on WDTV have 5.1 shows?
3. That also confirms the WDTV is sending HDMI audio in stereo. Since you don't have analog hooked with signal playing, it is expected that there will be no sound. Nothing to worry about.

After you complete setup in 1 above, Audio Sel will give you Optical 2 option. Even if you don't have a 5.1 show to test surround, you should still get it to work. Then it will just be a matter of finding the right show with 5.1 sound.

I think the problem is in the files. I checked the coding and they were stereo. I downloaded a true 5.1 test file and it played just fine. All speakers were doing what they should. No PCM light and the digital light came on. I guess I just need better files.

I have an older WDTV and it doesn't have the Audio Options you listed. All I get under Settings/AudioVideo is Stereo or Digital. No options for optical or AAC or WMA or Dolby Digital, or DTS. Just Stereo or Digital. It's an original WDTV. I checked my newer WDTV-Live in another room and it has all the options you listed. I'll check to see if there's a firmware update.

All in all, I think everything is working as it should work. I just need to get better movie files.

Nice! I'm glad the WDTV thing turned out to be a non issue
