HTR-6150 - HDMI video problem

I'm having a problem getting HDMI video output from a new HTR-6150 receiver to my LCD.

I've read that having this problem is pretty common due do "hand shake" issues between different components. I was wondering if any else who's had a similar problem managed to make it work. I don't want to spend a lot of time troubleshooting this if its more than likely not going to work.

I can always connect whatever components I'm using directly to the TV, but I was hoping to get rid of the cable mess that I have now - at least by a little bit.

Does anyone have any brilliant advice?

Welcome to the forum!

I'm downloading the owner's manual for your Yamaha now, but I'd like to ask some questions first to help find out if you are outputting video over HDMI from your receiver.

What video input are you using - HDMI, component, other?

Have you assigned the video inputs (if that's necessary - I'll know once I get the manual)?

Another question - what is the model number of your TV?

Thanks.

This may seem simple, but it's always best to double-check. Is your HDMI cable connected at the receiver end into HDMI OUT and for your TV into HDMI IN?

Now that I have the manual, here's a follow-up to why I asked those questions:
  1. The on screen display (OSD) is not output through the HDMI output
  2. Components connected to the receiver using a video input other than HDMI are not output through the HDMI output
  3. The HDMI input jacks are assignable, and if you aren't using the default selection for those jacks, then you need to assign them

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for taking the time to look into my problem.

john72953,

I agree that it's good to start with simple solutions first. When I've tested, I'm 95% certain that I had my components going to the appropriate in/out ports. But I only have one HDMI cable, so something Adam saw in the manual makes me think that what I was trying wont work.

As far as HDMI goes, I tried it two ways:

1) Ouput video from my Motorola (DCH6416 it says on front) cable box using component-RGB cables and audio using red/white (RCA?) audio cables into receiver's DTV/Cable component RGB in and DTV/Cable audio in. From receiver to TV I used the receiver's HDMI output to one of the TV's HDMI input ports. Result was audio, but no video.

2. Output from Motorola box HDMI into receiver's DTV/Cable HDMI input (there are 2 HDMI ports on the receiver) and from receiver to TV I used the component-RGB out. Again, audio and no video.

Adam,

What video input are you using - HDMI, component, other?
I hope the above answers your first question.

Have you assigned the video inputs (if that's necessary - I'll know once I get the manual)?
I haven't assigned anything that I know of - at least not on purpose. I saw the assignment options in the menu when I was looking around, but I didn't mess with anything. I figured that the default settings should have worked.

Another question - what is the model number of your TV?
TV is a Samsung LN46A550.

The on screen display (OSD) is not output through the HDMI output
So, the OCD isn't through HDMI. That explains why I never saw it.**

Components connected to the receiver using a video input other than HDMI are not output through the HDMI output
Ok, if I understand you, your saying that if I had 2 HDMI cables, and I would have connected the cable box HDMI to the receiver and the receiver HDMI to the TV, it would have worked.

The HDMI input jacks are assignable, and if you aren't using the default selection for those jacks, then you need to assign them
Things are becoming clearer I think. Does this mean that by using assignment I might be able to use my first approach from above?
Cable box >> component+RCA audio >> Receiver >> HDMI >> TV?

That would be nice.

I hope to hear back from you, but if I don't I'll look into those assignment options and hopefully get things working.

**But does that mean should I ever get HDMI video from the cable box passing through to the TV, that I wont be able to hit the display button and see the status of the receiver? I could do that when I was using the component-RGB and S-video from the receiver.

Yep, given that everything else is set up correctly.

Nope, sorry. With your receiver, HDMI goes to HDMI only. You can't convert any other video feed to HDMI, and you can't convert HDMI into any other video feed.

I can't answer your question about showing receiver status over HDMI. However, my assumptions is that no on screen display would work over HDMI, including receiver status. Just my assumption.

As a note, there is a nice diagram of how audio and video flows through your receiver (i.e. what connections you can use) on page 15 of your owner's manual.
