Just bought this Yammie to replace a Kenwood VR-7070 (earlier THX receiver) that would peak out and shut down on me at inopportune moments (Super Bowl) I went thru the YPAO setup after initally blasting some Steely Dan on CD and Rolling Stone Rock n' Roll Circus on DVD to test out sweet 7 channels, here's where the fun begins...At the conclusion of an effortless YPAO Auto setup, when I hit the "down" arrow to "set" the speakers, it would not lock, tried again w/OSD display and had same issue, hten when I went to operate receiver, the YPAO lite remained lit despite mic out. then when I turned receiver back on, only would show 2 channel sound. Yamaha is closed for weekend and website only showed factory reset procedures for up to 5870 and 1400 models, so no equivalent models to try the resets to factory. Went to store (Best Buy/Worst Service) and they said try the reset procedures for earlier models and if it fries, bring it back. Am Seriously considering returning it and getting the Onkyo TX-SR702 (last years model bit same features and I love the simplicity of the front controls vs. the 703) But am wondering if I will sacrifice power from this Yammie to the Onkyo as well as the vaunted Yammie durability and consistency (of which I've yet to see) I would rather get this unit going and avoid the hassle but am at wits end...ANY suggestions are appreciated. my components are as follows
htr-5890
fronts- Klipsch SB-1's
center-Polk CSM
surr rears-Vintage JBL Dorian C56's (I know, But I need end tables and the marble tops help)
Surr backs- Tivoli TDM2
Subwoofer-Tivoli TDPSI

Mitsubishi 5531 1080 projection
Sony CD/DVD DVP-NC665P

hmm...interesting. try the manual set-up to see what happens.

have you considered looking at yamaha's rx-v line? the 2400/2500/2600 models are of similar power ratings and come with slightly higher functionality levels for just a little more dough (less maybe on ebay), and I believe to be of higher overall quality (build-wise) than the comparable HTR line. I own a 2500 myself and have used an older HTR model before that; definately a considerable difference in strength of product.

sorry about best buy, have you searched these forums for similar threads? maybe you'll get lucky

I checked mem guard already to no avail, and the manual only makes scant mention of the parameter.ini feature, there are no asterisks in the numeric field to show that any changes were made. No one likes that onkyo for comparative ease of use?

jomutha,

The channel indicator lights show how many channels your current input source is, not the receiver's output.

The YPAO indicator light signifies you were successfully calibrated.

Not sure what source you were using, but I'd try both 2-channel (cd or tuner) and a multi-channel source.

At this point, I'm not sure you have a problem.

Bob is correct on both counts.

possible remedy

I talked to a support specialist @ Yamaha who was able to (pointedly) point out that DVD/CD was not set to digital vs. PCM. Also most surround broadcasts were not coming in true 5.1, Got HBO sig to verify this was true. He did not really address ny suspicions concerning the verified setting on the YPAO, I felt kinda rushed, actually. Still didn't get the reset info from him, anyone know on this model?

Hi Jomutha,

Here's some info from P.26 of the HTR-5890 manual:

"Altering any parameters in BASIC MENU will reset all parameters in SOUND MENU."

That should get you back to the starting point.
