I can't tell you how painful it is for me to write this so lets get it over with.

My father-in-law wants to be able to focus the sound a little more and was asking me about speakers. I'd like to get him an okay HTIB including a receiver for around $500 or so. To be honest probably the front 3 speakers would be fine for him.

Any suggestions? If I can't come up with something he will be heading to Best Buy soon and I can have that.

I don't know if onkyo still has those home theaters in a box but they used to have one for 500 bucks and it was good for a htib. they used to carry them at circuit city. but as you know, it is still a htib. best of luck to ya

My friend got a Denon reciever with a surround setup by Boston Acoustic for about $1,000 and I went to BB the other day and it looks like it has dropped to about $599. No idea if it's good. It's a HTIB.

That's exactly the one. Is it any good? He claims it is, but the audio guy at the store "wildabout hifi" said "don't insult me" when he brought it up...

That's an HIBT? I would consider that the best HIBT on the market.
the receiver is a Denon AV590 and the speakers are BA MCS90
here is a link for the specs for both you will need to download the product sheet.

P.S. The audio/sales guy is a douche, the "don't insult me" comment means he doesn't know Jack S*** about the product.

Yeah it's in a box. A really big box that takes two people to carry, but it's a HTIB none-the-less. I figured he didn't know, he was also trying to sell us speakers in upwards of $35,000. They were nice, but still. They also sold him a JVC projector with 1600 hours on the bulb for $5500. They gave him an extra lamp, but still... I wasn't living here yet otherwise I would have stopped it. He also bought the same HTIB for $1200 a few months ago... when it has been at a lower price for a while... he's not good at shopping.

We still have the Denon reciever as well, he has since bought an integra and gotten some floor-standing speakers that match the kit. The center that is in the box is tiny garbage though. There is a real center for the set for around $250.

The Denon is sitting behind the couch downstairs. It failed, and I would wager it has absolutely nothing to do with the vodka that someone spilled on it........... anyway, it's a pretty good receiver. The new Integra we got is about 6x better though.

But if that's a good deal, then I say why not. I spent about that much for all my speakers in my Sony-SS series combined without a receiver.

The sub in that set is pretty good as well. It's fairly large and a big reason why the box is so big.

Here's some pics of the stuff IRL:

Fronts (now converted surrounds):

Surrounds:

Also, all the speakers have this rubbery coating on them that make them feel like rubber-bands. They all have a "bell" shape to them as well which is interesting.

That guy must work on commission 35k for speakers, new rule you must go shopping with your friend if he is that bad at it.:D In your pic is the receiver an AV588?

It says AVR588, so yeah, pretty sure that's it. I've got it taken apart in front of me. Found some of the alcohol damage, wiped it up, and am now drying it out to see if it's savable for another room. The issue it was having was that when music would go through it loud, like a particular beat or anything, he screen would flicker, and the higher the volume the more distorted the picture. It was wierd.

That is weird, does it act weird with movies 2?
Yeah, doesn't matter what it's playing, games, movies, music, anything. The crazy thing is it doesn't matter weather it's on the TV or on a projector in the house, or if the video signal even go through the receiver, doesn't matter- it will still make the picture do that. It's posessed I believe, and I may have to call an exorcist.

There are Sony, LG, Panasonic HTIB that fit that price range. But if you want one with pretty good sound I would suggest the Harman Kardon 5.1 system. Its about $480 on amazon.com. It doesn't come with a receiver but you can get a 5.1 receiver for cheap. Have you thought about a soundbar?
