I have never posted on here before but wanted to say thanks. I read almost everything on here over the past 3 weeks to increase my knowledge of the HT world. This past weekend I embarked on my journey of installing my HT system. The set-up looks great and sounds ok; I will take some pictures and show them off in the near future. Below is what we did; all work was performed by me and a friend who had very little knowledge of HT systems. The local custom installers wanted ~ $1000 to do this…it cost me 3 beers and some good scotch…

Mounted 42” LCD above fireplace

Ran 5.1 system; wired for a 7.1

Ran 2 speakers outside for the patio

Ran almost 400 ft of speaker through the walls and attic

Ran 50ft RGB from video source to LCD

Ran satellite box from back of room to LCD

I saved a ton of money after reading hints on this site. I took back all my monster cable stuff and replaced it with 14 awg CL-3 speaker wire from Home Depot, all video/audio cables and connectors from Blue Jean’s or Mono-price. The job took some time but helpful hints on “fishing” wires through walls helped a lot.

Above you will notice that I said that the system sounds “ok”; this is because I had to use a Sony dream-system HTIB that I already had. The system is located in a room that is 25ft x 30 ft with 14ft ceilings. After my “significant other” saw how clean the install was and heard the sound, she was very impressed. I have now talked her in to letting me upgrade for Christmas. It will be a simple process of just swapping out the devices now that I am wired for everything.

Here is what I get for Christmas:

AXIOM Epic Master / 350
YAMAHA RX-N600 or one of the nice Onkyo’s. She is limiting me to all silver components.
50” LCD. I haven’t picked out which one yet.

Once again…thanks for the help

Hey Greg, welcome to forum!! I'm new to the forum also. These people know their stuff. Great resources. Sounds like you tackled a big job. Feels nice when it's done though, doesn't it?
I also did alot of reading before I built my home theatre in the basement.
Don't forget to post your pics sometime.

At sometime I will post my specs with pics, but here's a general breakdown.

92" screen (manual)
Infocus 4805 Screenplay projector
Sony dvd player
Toshiba Super VHS player
Yamaha Receiver 6.1 surround
Mission floor front speakers
Mission kickass centre channel
3 Energy 6" ceiling speakers.
Omage 10" sub

Sounds and looks fantastic!!

Again, welcome to the forum. As for the upgrades.... it's never ending.
That's part of the fun though.

P.S. movie posters top it all off.

Ciao for now.

The Axiom speakers will be fine but the bundled sub, the EP350 will not be able to do justice to that room by itself. You might want to look at putting 2 subs. For the sub, SVS, Outlaw, AV123, Hsu, etc should be the brands to check out as well. Not saying that you should get both at the same time, but definitely consider it.

Noted but I feel certain "she" wont let me use 2. One was hard enough to convince her of since she may lose a end table out of the deal. How about a more poweful one than what I was thinking? I am actually surprised that the little Sony sounds as good as it does but then again I wasn't expecting much.

Welcome.:D

Great job! Hope your cost didn't interfere with proper installation:D

Enjoy.

Maybe if you put one sub right next to the seating area... one powerful sub should do it, but then it wont come cheap. for instance the SVS PB-12 Plus 2 is $1200 to $1600 plus shipping.

Alternately, you can look into getting a tractile transducer like the Buttkicker for the very low end rumble.

What do you mean by that?

He was referring to being impaired my achohol.

I agree with Agar that you will need a MUCH better subwoofer for that room. From axiom, I wouldn't go smaller then the EP600.

The PB-12Plus/2 from SVS in 25Hz tune should have enough output, but a Cylinder would probably have more.

How much can you set aside for a subwoofer?

lol...I get it...

What I could "set aside" and what I am willing to spend are 2 different things. I would prefer not to spend more than 2 grand on the speakers and reciever. Keep in mind that I do appriciate good sound but I am not a like you freaks...lol...

What the heck is a cylinder?

Dont know of other manufacturers that make them, but I am sure you can Google it.

Hsu was the originator of the cylinder sub in the not too distant past. It may still be part of their inventory but don't know is they are still making it.:D
