HT System facelift...

Hi Everyone, I'm new here and have been out of the loop for quite a while.

I'm thinking of making some upgrades to my system. My HT system consists of a B&K ref. 20, AV5000 sii (5x125), and a Paradigm PW-2500 (15" sub-woofer).

I also have a 2 channel system; Adcom GTP-450, Acurus A3x200 (I have used this to run my fronts and center in the home theater and may use it for that purpose in the future, 7.1?), Grace Digital wi-fi tuner, and a Polk sub.

I want to upgrade the Reference 20, but I'm not totally up to date on what's available. I want to keep under $2K. Help, thoughts, or comments would be appreciated

Thanks!

Other than Subs - No speakers at all ??:rolleyes:;)
If you want to improve sound - upgrade speakers, if you need/want features - go with electronics

I would just get a Denon 3312 or 3313 or 4311 receiver and use as a pre-pro.

If you must have a "pre-pro", get the Integra DHC-40.2 or 80.2.

I think the Denon AVR-3312 will sound just as good as any pre-pro out there.

I just wish more manufacturers that support things like DSX, Neo:X, and DPLIIz would include more than 7.1ch pre-out. I've never been a fan of matrixed sound, but I want to be able to try it. I have 7.1 setup now and don't really even notice the back channels. the 3311 looks like a great deal though.

Speakers are Def techs all around for the HT. I'm happy enough with these for now. For the 2 channel setup I have polk monitor 50s.

What part of your system are you not happy with?

Thanks for the response. The two pre's I've been looking at (about the only two I found under $2K) are the Integras and the Marantz AV7005. The Integras are hard to find and I can get the Marantz for less than either Integra. The reviews seem to better for the Marantz too. It seems there used to be more available when I got B&K gear???

I was thinking using my amps with a pre/pro would be a better solution than a receiver. Judging by what I see available, this might not be true anymore?

Thanks

^^ excellent question.

p.s: I wont be happy with polk monitor 50's - just saying... You can so much better than these especially for dedicated two channel.

That is a good question, I wonder myself too:D I wonder if I would really notice a difference...

The Ref 20 is getting long in the tooth. I think I got it around '98-99. One input is out, luckily you can rename the inputs:) It's always been slow - the sound always starts about 5 seconds after the image or you miss the first few seconds of a CD. There's no HDMI input/outputs on it. I've also run into decoding issues with some Dolby Digital formats (I found a setting buried in the blu ray player that allows me to overcome this, at least on some). It's also only a 20bit/48khz dac/adc.

My second remote, HTM MX-500, is dying and it doesn't support any of the newer standards so you can't program it to do much else.

I'm also seriously considering going to 7.1 by moving the Acurus and picking up a 2channel amp off ebay for the two channel system.

On the other hand, I've worked around most of these one way or another and have thought about running it until it dies. Yet, that seems pointless too...

The monitor 50s aren't that bad and serve their intended use. They fill the living room and kitchen with music which is almost always on (we're all musicians in my family). I thought you'd rip the Adcom if anything. It seems people like bashing these on all these forums. All serious listening and viewing is done in our "screening room."

Thanks.

Ok, Now I see full picture :)
Ok, starting with HT AVR - yes AVR - getting a pre-pro will get you better quality or save money - 3312CI as recommended above is great choice
Amazon has it sometimes (open box - same a new warranty) for $505 - you just missed the deal, but keep an eye for it
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/deals-deals-deals/82697-amazon-denon-3312-open-box-$505.html

Alternatives:
DENON AVR-3312CI 7.2 Integrated Network A/V Surround Receiver w/AirPlay | Accessories4less
DENON AVR-4310CI 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver w/ Networking | Accessories4less
Onkyo TX-NR1009 9.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver | Accessories4less

Disregard Onkyo haters - I think Onkyo makes one of best value products
Bottom line:
Getting new avr will not guaranteed make it sound better, but will sure make your life easier

Re remote: This one is a pickle - There are literally No good universal remotes which consumer can just buy and use. Harmony is a close as you can get, but they have their own issues to start QC - my 880 died after year and half and many other owners of same model had same fate. Logitech denied design issue

URC makes some great remotes, but best ones only sold thru dealers - priced thru the roof and expensive initial config to boot.
URCC MX450 is good option as this one of these you CAN buy as consumer and program yourself

I know your "dedicated" stereo system is only used for background music, but it doesn't have to be this way. These are great speakers you can run easily full-range and really enjoy the music.

It looks like you and AcuDeftechguy really like the Denon 3312. What are your thoughts on this compared to the Marantz AV7005 pre pro? What are the pros and cons of each? The pricing is pretty comparable between both of them.

Replacing the Monitor 50s will be a project for down the road a bit.

Thanks!

For better or worse or indifferent, or if anyone cares:rolleyes:, I went with the Integra DHC-40.2. The nearby (nearest anyway) dealer got it in today and I pick it up tomorrow. I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

Now what to do with my Reference 20???

Thanks for every one's help. I appreciate your patience.

Nice choice. Integra makes a solid product. Have fun setting everything up. :D

Got it set up.... Though I'm sure I'll figure out some fine tweaking to do:D It was relatively easy, at least compared to setting up my ref 20 using an SPL meter and digging through menus.

All the digital cables/optics are gone and I'm running almost pure HDMI. The one exception being for my music which is brought in through a digital cable. The Audyssey setup was great; easy to use and did a great job. I'm very pleased with it.

I was also intrigued by the DTS NEO:6 music. I'm not sure how much I'll use it, but it's by far the best sounding 2 channel expansion I've heard. Dolby seems to miss the mark completely with their version, the front center is obnoxiously noticeable, just like the expansion versions built in the ref 20.

Also, and maybe I'm losing my mind or just imagining, but I could also swear the TV (directv) looks better. I'm too lazy to play with it to verify! It looks great so I'll just go with it.

The only downsides there are, and this is almost nitpicking, is that wireless isn't built in and it would be great if someone could make a good family friendly remote. Intergra's remote programmed up and works OK, but ultimately my family, and probably me most of the time, will opt for using individual remotes instead of it.

Cheers.
