HT Newbie - which speakers?

Hi,

I am trying to put together my first HT system. I have decided on a Denon receiver, but I am having a tough time deciding on the 5.1 speakers. I am willing to spend in the range of $800-$1000. I have space limitations so I am looking for some compact speakers.

Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

The BIC Venturi bookshelf and center speakers get a lot of props around here. I think 5 of those (4 bookshelf and 1 center, or 5 centers) and a "decent" sub (Cadence X-Sub, for example) will be right in your range, maybe even a little under if you shop right.

Also from BIC is the Acoustech 5.1 Home theater system, but that includes floorstanding fronts (40" tall) and probably wouldn't work. $925 shipped for it if you buy it at the internet standard price ($799)

I would take a look at the BIC brand of speakers though. They are very well made and pretty much the best you can get for the money.

I am debating on getting the DV5312, with a BIC center also and then getting two BIC DV52si's for the surround speakers. You can find the BIC center speaker on eBay for just under a $100, the DV5312's are floor standing speakers and are around $450/pair and the DV52's are bookshelfs that you can get at about $150/pair. This setup does not require a sub, but if you wanted you could even get a Dayton sub ($140) or Candence X-sub ($230). So that basically puts you at around $850 - $950 without shipping and probably if you went with the Dayton sub you could have it all with shipping included for under $1000 (if you went without a sub and used the floorstanders as your sub for now until to see if you really needed a sub then it could definately be had for under $1000 shipped).

Currently I am think about just getting the DV5312's and either a 53CLR or a 52si center. Either one of the centers can be bought on eBay for under a $100. The DV5312 have the ability to be upgraded at a later time (you can put an amp in them to power the woofers, they have 12" woofers in them already!!!) The amp for the tower is a 200 watt amp and you can get it for about $180 per amp, so $360 for the pair. If you wanted to do without the two surround speakers for a little while and just get the two DV5312 with the amps included in them (this would basically give you a very nice front two and essentially two 12" woofers) and then get a BIC center your price for the whole setup would still be around $1000 shipped (maybe a little more). I really like the option of putting an amp in the speakers at a later date because the DV5312's are a great set of speakers and if you put the amp in there they become powered towers with a lot of quality and depth to their sound. Have fun with your decision.

I'd suggest that you only consider the DV62si and DV62CLR speakers. The 53 and 52 speakers use a 1/2" tweeter and just don't have the great sound of their larger brethren. Despite the higher price for the 62 series, it's worth it, considering they're still dirt cheap as it is.

Yes, those the ones I was referring to earlier, I just didn't want to say the wrong model number and get corrected :) I try to avoid looking stoopid, but it doesn't seem to make much a difference.

Kind of funny that no one is willing to say anything besides BIC, so I guess the question comes down to using the bookshelf or center speakers. The center, with the Ed Frias mods, is going to cost more than the respective bookshelf speaker, right? Maybe 3 centers across the front and a couple bookshelves for surrounds?

Did you even read my post?

Yes, I did read your post. What happened was I typed up my reply, got distracted, walked away from my computer for about an hour and a half, and then came back finished my reply and posted it. So I am sorry if it looked like I was taking your suggestion. You did make some good comments about BIC and I agree with all of them.

So basically whatever was in my previous post that sounded like something Hanse18 said, go with what Hanse18 said, he seems to be slightly more knowledgable then me.:D

Perhaps the Definitive Technology ProCinima line. The 80's retail at $1000.
