Hi guys,

Just wondered what yoy thought of the HSU 5.1 package.. For around $1159 they are selling:

1 VTF-1 MK2 Subwoofer
4 HB-1 MK2 Horn Bookshelf Speakers
1 HC-1 MK2 Horn Center Channel speaker

I am thinking about buying he Onkoyo NR818. Just wanted some opinions on this.

Thanks.

What's your goal?

How big is your room?

What's your budget?

Have you ever listened to these?

I will mainly use this for movies but also some music... My room is pretty big, i don't know the exact dimensions but I would say around 12 feet by 15.. But it has vaulted ceilings and the kitchen is attached to one side..

Ideally i dont want to spend more than $1500 on speakers.. I havent listened to these although have read some great reveiews.

You can do better.... I am not a fan of horn tweeters PI heard the first series of these and did not like them although I was told the new ones are nice...}

For $1500 in your room I would go...

and FOCAL Chorus 814V 716v Dual 6½ Floorstanding Speakers Gloss Black Pair | Accessories4less

FOCAL Chorus CC814V 800V Dual 6½" Center Speaker Gloss Black Each | Accessories4less

then pick up a cheap set of surrounds like Amazon.com: Fluance AVBP2 Bipolar Surround Sound Satellite Speakers: Electronics or Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair 300-652 ect, any speaker will do for surround duty..

as for the sub I would go stf2...

My posts aren't working?

This was a thread on the HSU setup.. I just read some reviews saying they were a good option for that price point.. I just wanted to see what everyones opinions was on them.

If the focals are still better then its not an issue.

@imcloud why opt for the stf2 over the vtf 1 mk2?

Or if I can stretch it should I just go with the more powerful vtf3 mk4? My room is very big and has very high vaulted ceilings.

The Hsu speakers are very good, but if you have a large room, you need to get one of the 12" or 15" subs. I would not go with a VTF1 in a room with vaulted ceilings. A VTF3 would be a lot more appropriate.

I'd for sure go up at least one notch on the subwoofer to a VTF-2 or VTF-3.

As for the Hsu speakers I've listened to those speakers and while I'm not a horn tweeter fan the current generation of Hsu Speakers didn't sound bad at all. That said I really prefer Ascent Acoustics CMT-340SE up front with either HTM-200 or CBT-170SE as surrounds but that's personal taste. If money is too tight for those upgrades then I'd cut back on the receiver. Generally you want to put 2/3-3/4 of your budget into the speakers and subwoofer and no more than 1/4-1/3 into the receiver. If you're in the US you can save a few bucks by buying a factory refurbished Onkyo TX-NR709 (skip the 717) or wait for next years sales on the 818.

The STF-2 and VTF-1 are nearly identical, the VTF-1 just gives you a settings option to trade away bass extension for a bit more volume.
