I'm looking for an entry level sub and was hopeing to get some feedback on these two. Is there a significant difference for the extra $100? It will be going into my townhouse, and though the listening area is only about 15x12 feet, one side is three quarters open to the dining room, kitchen area.

Ive never heard the Hsu but own an x-sub.

room is 14x18 with a hallway in the back, fireplace to the middle left, kitchen/dining room to the side and a split level foyer to the back right.

x-sub does the job in this space, and I imagine the HSU would as well.

I have an STF-2 in a 14x14 room, it fills it really well, the sub I find definitely hits harder than most 12" subs I have heard. So I would say the STF-1 would fill your room fine, I think they are a well made and well powered sub. I went a little overkill and got the -2 since I will be moving my HT to a bigger house/room shortly.

If you look at specs alone, the two are very similar. The main differences being small - the X-sub goes to 28Hz vs the STF-1's 32Hz, though in the real world, you probably wouldn't be able to tell much difference in room. One thing the HSU subs have that I like is the abilty to bypass the sub's x-over completely rather than just turning it all the way up. So I'd have to say, you definitely wouldn't go wrong with either of them.

I've owned the VTF-2 also and it was an excellent sub.

If you use the LFE in on the X-sub, the X-over is bypassed.

After checking out HSU's site, I've made my decision. I was expecting to have to pay $299 for the STF-1, but found out it was only $249, and the STF-2 is $319! I'm getting the STF-2!

A little overkill on the sub is never a bad thing. ;)

Lol, I would have to agree on that, I love my STF-2 and Im sure you will too bud, its an awesome sub. I keep mine to almost the minimum level when watching movies with low deep bass, and it still is insanely loud, makes watching movies about 10x better. All I really have to compare it to is a HTIB system , but still am super impressed with it.

You won't get any argument from me. An excellent choice IMO. Especially because your have openings into other rooms, which, as far as the sub is concerned it's one big room.
