HSU STF-1 vs. KEF PSW-2500

Hello All,

I currently run a setup of 4 KEF IQ1s and a single KEF IQ2c for my center. I'm trying to round out my set with a subwoofer. What would you choose between the matching KEF PSW-2500 for about $650, or a HSU STF-1 for $450? I'd even consider a HSU STF-2 for about $600, but my room isn't huge being about 10x10 with hardwood floors. I like the look of the KEF, especially since it would match my set perfectly in Dark Apple. Unfortunately there isn't much talk about the sub in the forums. And of course the HSU is a tad boring, but the rave reviews are hard to miss.

Any advice is appreciated!

Edit:I'm in Canada, so that's why some of the pricing may seem a little skewed here. Even though our dollar is actually stronger at the moment, the fact remains that this doesn't always translate into savings.

I'm not familiar with the KEF subs, but can say the STF-1 is a great subwoofer. I have one in a second room and it never lets me down.

I've never heard the KEF sub, but if it kicks it pretty good, go for it. I've a VTF-3 HO with Turbo, and its a monster in the bass department, but its black, flat black. Not a pretty Apple like the KEF.

BUT...also consider the SVS Subs, they have a great Rep. and more finishes than Hsu.

If you go Hsu get the STF-2 with the 10" driver. In a 10x10x8=800 cu ft. room, it will probably be the most bag for the buck.

The KEF seems like a good sub on paper for a sealed design. For $650.00 it seems like a bit much for what it is, but it sure looks really nice. :)

I would look into the SVS PB10NSD or PB-12NSD as they are in your price range and will best the performance of the KEF. They do not look as nice though but do offer a fair amount of finishes.

I have the STF-1 in my home office. Its roughly 14x14 and carpeted. I still have trouble believing its a 8" sub. Its been great.

Interesting. Thanks for all the replies! I've been looking at SVS as well, but I like the idea of both the HSU and the KEF having downward firing drivers since I have a little dog running around. I'm sure he would run into it and at least rip the grill felt and worse damage the driver of a side firing sub. (I know this might sound stupid) ; )

Also, I've contacted a few places that have carried HSU in Canada in the past and someone from homedigitalav.com said HSU is no longer distributed in Canada. I've only been reading how expensive it can get to ship a heavy sub across borders unfortunately.

I've also heard that Paradigm is shipping a new sub that will replace their PDR and PS line but I've been told they will start near $1000. Ahh choices...

Since I have one, I can recommend the HSU STF 2. It's an excellent sub, which I found quite easy to integrate with my NHT speakers. It has lots of low authority for a modest price. BTW, if you know someone on our side of the border who can send it across, the STF 2 is available over the web for $349. With shipping it came to about $370.
