With HSU Research discontinuing the STF-1, what is a recommended replacement, for both price and performance?

It looks like it's still able to be placed in a cart on the HSU website. Unless you know something I don't it would appear you can order one today.

When a person places the STF-1 in the cart, the discontinued message is displayed. When emailed about availability, HSU's reply was, "Hi there, the STF-1 subwoofer has been discontinued.
Sincerely, The Hsu Research Sales Team".

So was this a sub you had your eye on, or are you trying to get duals? What's your interest in this sub?

The Outlaw M8 should do fine as a stand in for the STF1, but I would save up a bit more and go for the STF2. An 8" just doesn't cut it for bass reproduction, and a 10" just barely cuts it.

It's not just 8" vs 10" vs 12" vs 15" (that's car audio crazy talk lol) You can put an 8" woofer in a horn loaded box and it will rearrange your furniture.

That said, the goal is to have a good audible response from 20-80hz, which is where home theater and music bass exists. The STF 1, and 2 both fall off shy of 20 hz. they also have limited power to play particularly loud or fill up a medium to large size room.

For the HSU line, if you are doing HT, and music, I suggest saving up for the VTF 2. It covers all the bases.

I would definitely step up a hair to the STF-2.

VTF-1 :) Shoot for the STF-2 though as has already been said. THAT is really the sweet spot of budget subs.

Thanks for your advice. I am putting together a Audioholic $1000 recommended system.

I'm personally not in 100% agreement with the official 1k systems. Please share which one you are looking at

So far, I have the Denon AVR-S500BT Receiver, and a pair NHT SuperZero 2.1 monitors. My thoughts were to build a stereo system that could be expanded into a 5.1 home theater system as funds became available. The room is 17'W x 20'L, 8' ceiling. Open to suggestions/based on what I have so far.

I'm biased, but I believe starting with a $1000 2.1 system is preferred. You can save and add a center then surrounds later.

Agreed, at $1000 your sound quality for on 2.1 speakers will be leaps and bounds above any surround sound system you buy. Stereo is making a huge come back, and for good reason. Lots of people would rather have only two great sounding speakers rather than five ho-hum speakers.

I'm a firm believer that you should buy the best 2.1 set up your present budget can afford, and piece together matching center and surrounds later.
