How would you feed a power amp with a no pre-outs receiver?

As the title states, what methods exist for feeding the main L-R speakers of a 5.1 system when you have an older or less-feature laden receiver?

I'm not looking to do it, it's just that my cousin who I've been working with to upgrade his system said he visited one of his brothers and that's what he had running. I have no details (neither does he), so I'm wondering how one can do it on the cheap. His brother is a man of more meager means than either of us.

Never used one myself, have heard of them only. Maybe someone else with experience will pop in....
