Hey guys, I go dumpster diving every now and then for computer/audio parts and I found a Pioneer HTZ-SW7 Subwoofer from a boxed home theater system. I have no idea on how to turn it on to test it as i needs to have a special cord from the receiver part of the set which i don't have. I know the sub works as i hooked it directly to a car amp, but i need this amp for the house :/ Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Newbie Matt

It worked when hooked to a car amp?

Sounds like it needs a 12 volt power supply.

No, I was saying i tested just the sub with an amp that is in my car, as it connects directly to the amp that is on the back of the box. The amp has a 110v input on the back and nothing happens when connected, just like on my dad's JVC sub/amp. What is also on the back is... outputs for the surround speakers, and 1) one RCA female and a 10-pin female receptacle labeled "use only with HTZ-C7" and also 2) a 10-pin receptacle with "Use only with DU-HT7".

Please help as i don't want to resort to shorting out some plugs hoping to get something :p

I hate to say it, but you did find it in a dumpster. It is most likely broken.;)

Not sure, I've found brand new computer/Server cases, a computer with an athlon 64 and 200gb hd working... list goes on.... but i think your right in this case, i found the receiver as well which did not work when plugged in. This set is 110 only and as we are in germany, i dont think they knew about the voltage and blew it. I really could use an amp for this sub, was going to use an old Sansui amp that i found but it really screwed up. Anyone know where i could get a good cheep 50w 8 ohm amp from?

think about it. Did you test the amp or the speaker?

Big difference. The speaker could be fine but the amp that drives it could very well be dead.

You might try googling for an owner's manual for that unit but my money is on it being dead.

In any case, you're most likely gonna have to start jumpering wires on that big ol' plug and/or learning how to do internal rewiring. In either case, good luck. these all in one propritary units march to the beat of a different drum and don't play well with outsiders.

As Markw indicated. However, why not pull the built in amp, and also check the fuse . Maybe it went and protected the unit?
If not, after pulling the amp, you can run a speaker wire out of the box and use it as a passive sub?
