My brother just gave me a cerwin vega cls-12s that he had sitting in storage while he was in Iraq. It worked when he put in storage but the receiver he had doesn't.

Is there a simple way I can test this sub to see if it is still good? I do not have a receiver or access to one to test this on...

All i have is a computer with a sound card, and a 400w Sony stereo system.

Is there any way I can test this sub using either of them? I am about to be ordering a full surround sound setup and need to know if I have to budget in a sub or not.

yeah, connect wires to the subs terminals and tap them onto your cars battery terminals. if the speaker moves, its fine

if the sub has more than 1 set of terminals, do them one at a time, checking each voice coil

If you have an analog output on your computer, you can hook that up to the input of the subwoofer, and it should give you bass that way. Start with the volume turned low, and gradually turn it up.

Whatever you do, do not hook it up to a car battery. That is terrible advice.
