How to choose dvd sound processing

I've been choosing the sound processing on my Onkyo 805 by clicking thru and using whichever sounds best. How does one know the proper setting the movie was recorded in?

IMO, the "proper" setting is the one that sounds the best to you.

I believe that you can use the "Direct" mode on your 805 to listen to the unchanged audio track (except for the EQ and bass management, which I think you should still use).

I can't help but think that I'm missing some info if I listen in Dolby 5.1 but the movie used THX. Just an example BTW. Am I wrong about that?

I sometimes use the THX processing on my Pioneer, which is intended to recreate the cinema experience in your home. They claim that the audio tracks for the discs are mixed for theaters and not living rooms - I'm not convinced about that, though. :) I really like the THX mode on my Pioneer 1015, but I'm not as happy with it on my Elite VSX-23.

You aren't actually missing any info. It's just a different way of EQing the sound in your system.
