How to activate Sub w/2 fronts?

Is it possible to have my sub hooked up from the preout and still somehow have a set up where it is active when I listen to music in stereo mode with my 2 fronts? In another words, I want to listen to music with my 2 fronts and sub only, without having to double up sub and 2 front wires in the 2 front inputs.

I've got a Pioneer vsx d509 receiver and a Boston CR400 sub.

Yes, your receiver should be able to operate in 2.1 mode. You'll need to check the owners manual to see how to activate that setting. It's as simple as knowing which button to press.
