I have a Samsung PN42A450 Plasma TV that is hooked to Yamaha RX V663BL receiver via HDMI cable. I also have a DVD player connected to the Yamaha.
The Yamaha is connected to 5 speaker surround plus a subwoofer.

Question: I have basic cable so I can connect the cable directly into by Samsung Plasma without the cable box. Can I somehow still get the surround sound effect. Can the plasma rely the audio signals to the Yamaha receiver via HDMI and from there to the speakers? Or am I destine to only hearing the sound from the plasma speakers? If so, do I have other options?

In order to do this with HDMI you would need a receiver and TV with ARC (audio return channel). You do not have this with your setup so the best you can do is connect the optical out of the TV to the receiver. You still may only get 2.0 unless you are getting HD feeds then you will get 5.1.

You can get 5.1 sound from the DVD player through your receiver and it's attached speakers, assuming the DVD has this. Most do. The only way you can get sound from the TV through your receiver is via the red/white analog audio outputs, assuming the TV has these. Some don't.

Now, if you use an extertenal TV antenna, there might be some hope by using a digital output on th TV but it won't work for any other sources.

No. I believe this subject was answered in one of, if not your only, previous post. You need a cable box or that computer alternative someone offered. This horse is dead. Stop beating it already.
