How much to spend on what?

I am new to this and almost completely ignorant to any information when it comes to sound systems. I have a budget of around $2000 for speakers/sub/reciever. From what I read it seems like all I need is 5.1 system but would like to pick up a nice reciever and maybe upgrade to 6.1 or 7.1 in the future. I also would like to have a reciver I can hook my computer up to since I plan to use this system for my computer as well.

Some people have told me with my budget I should spend around $500 for the sub but don't know how much I should put down on a reciever. Is it worth it to spend less on speakers (~$600-700) and more on a nice reciever (~$800). Also as I look into speakers it seems like they are either below what I want to spend (~$400-500) or way out of my price range. Any suggestions on speakers or recievers brands I should look into, for my price range.

A friend recommended svsounds low end sub (PB10-NSD)

Thanks,
MM

Nope, far better performance will be had by putting more money toward the speakers.

Also worth noting, you can safely spend much less on the surround speakers so as to have more to spend on the front channels and sub.

It would make little sense to have an $800 receiver with $600 speakers IMO... The PB-10 is a great choice, but how big is your room?
