I was just wondering what everyone thoughts were about how much a price break was need to convince you to pick a refurbished, remanufactured, etc. reciever, over one that is brand new?

I like to see 20 -30% off the original price, but this has to equal at least 100 dollars in savings before I'll think about. However, the nice thing about refurbished products is that you know that the unit has been individually tested before being resold.

That doesn't guarantee all the problems will be worked out. Even if there are other known issues with a particular model, they will not fix it unless it actually exhibits a symptom of that known issue - similar to what they do for cars for TSBs.

I like to see at least 20-30% off for a refurb at least. Last year's models generally have a bigger discount than the current year's models.

As JG says, a refurb doesn't guarantee a perfect product. The odds are, though, that given the labor cost of a US repair shop, the refurb replaced an entire board, rather than look for a single capacitor or resistor. I would say that it's probably much less likely to fail, especially if it's a known problem with a known fix.

I would still not pay more than the 70% the guys above recommend, all the more so if they don't give you at least a year warranty on the fix.

I absolutely agree with the 70% limit. Especially when you consider the fact that a refurb could come with small cosmetic blemishes that over time can really get on your nerves. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that any departure from a brand new out of the box appearance needs to be compensated with cash.:D

Personally, I would expect a 40%+ price drop on a refurb.
My experience with refurb products is that they do work fairly well, but not as well as a brand new product.

40 Percent

Forty percent sounds fair!
