How much does a "room within a room" cost to build?

I think a 12x12x7 (LxWxH) foot room would suffice. The room it would be built in is not that much larger, but it just seems simpler to put up walls rather than put stuff on existing walls.

Keep in mind I rent, so as little damage done and as "transportable" as possible the better.

That said, this room within a room will be for home theater use exclusively. I want to be able to listen at near reference levels without any worry of disturbing neighbors. I will also appreciate the improved acoustics and dead silence inside the room.

If I can do it for around 3000 dollars it seems like it'd be worth it, seeing as I'd never have to jump for the remote, I would never be bothered by outside noise, and I could remain living in my cheap apt instead of feeling like I have to rent a house to watch/listen to movies the way it should be done.

I'm not great at construction so I would pay for some assistance. But with parts and labor, how much should it cost to build a room with pretty good acoustics and pretty good isolation. Keep in mind the isolation doesn't have to be PERFECT I mean I'm not going to be shooting guns in there.

Thanks !

From an acoustic standpoint square room is bad!

Can you make the dimensions different. A square room (12 x 12) is very bad from an acoustics reflection standpoint.

Otherwise in my humble opinion sounds like and interesting and doable project.

Good luck!

The problem in your situation is that if you build another room inside an existing DRYWALLED room, you're creating a triple leaf system which can actually make sound transmission worse. To do room in a room, you'd need to remove the existing drywall from the room you have first which I don't think is going to fly in a rental.

but if i float the room and use non transferring materials shouldnt the sound be isolated?

Structurally, yes. However, the 3 leaves of mass will emphasize sound transfer between the 2 spaces worse than if you didn't do anything. Some frequencies will be better, some will be worse.

It's really not recommended if you don't pull down the drywall from the exiting room first.

I am not sure your floor would support another room like that unless you are on the ground and on slabs. And, not sure the owner will allow it. I wouldn't.
