Well I just went from a AVR-987 (2807) to the 3808 so my comparison is not quite as direct as yours...However I did go from a newer model to the 3808 and I can tell you that I certainly noticed a difference but not a gigantic one. The 3808 to me just sounded more focused and clear than the 987 which was 110 watts and yours is at 120---the 3808 rated 130 watts.

If you are looking for more juice for your movies and you are thinking that the 3808 will provide that advantage--aside from the HDMI, new GUI, HD codecs, and other newer features--you will probably just be better off getting an external amp and use the pre-outs on your 3805 instead. That is if you don't need any of the other mentioned features...

Now if you do need those newer features (which I know having HDMI is practically a must now) AND you want an AVR with more power at a similar price point you might look to the Onkyos which will give you more in that department. You could probably find a new TX-NR905 for about the same price or even less than the 3808ci retail....

For Blu ray movies you may hear the difference due to the HD sound formats but if you listen to DD, DTS or CD in pure direct you will have to possess superior hearing ability to tell them apart. I should add that, if you can see them side by side when doing A/B comparison you will be subject to the famous Placebo effect.

If they have the same setup and equalization software, then they shouldn't sound any different. What gives a receiver its "sound" is the way the room setup software reacts to the room acoustics.
