How many times can you rip a CD?

So if you could rip a CD an unlimited amount of times, how come one time I ripped a DVD about 15-20 times and a message appeared.
The message said something about "layers." And the program was not able to read from that disc, it would not read it and that message would pop up.
The program I was using was Nero. When I played the dvd I tried ripping, it didn't looked right, and on some parts the dvd player will just stop playing it.

Why??

It was a burned CD not an Original, not sure if DVD-R, RW, or RAM.

What if the CD is original, a CD I bought at a store, is there a limit to how many times you can rip it, and/or copy it?

Smudge or fingerprint on the disc? Pay particular attention closer to the center, as DVDs are read from the inside out. If there is a smudge, use a microfiber cloth and wipe from center to edge -- never side-to-side. Also, is it a burned disc or a pressed disc? If burned, is it a DVD-R, RW, RAM, what?

It was burned, I don't remember whether it was DVD-R, RW, or RAM.

Also I have the same question towards original CDs bought at a store.

Have you seen the AH article on the longevity of discs? That article summarizes the answer to your questions as well as any. To my knowledge, discs aren't limited to a particular number of reads; but it's possible that, if your disc isn't visibly damaged or marred, it's simply cheap and crappy.

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it. I have like 15-25 CDs, all original, that's why this answer means a lot to me.
