How many speaker makers are there?

I was on the diy discussions and find it quite interesting. But I got to wondering, since parts and knowledge are so accessible, there must be tons of makers that I've just never heard of (probably just because of big marketing budgets).

How many makers are there? Do they make good speakers?

Professional makers as in they have a business license and are legal and not doing it out of their basement. I was interested in the mom'n'pop lesser known speaker makers.

Is there a list of many of them? I always find new names when I read the forums.

I don't think you are going to find a list, Im guessing you mean internet direct companies or special order companies like ascend, emotiva, tekton, HSU, SVS, axiom, HTD, Swan, outlaw, aperion, EMP, av123 {lol}, and about 50 more... If you are looking for a custom builder you can find them around the forums lurking in the darkness waiting for someone to ask "who can make me a custom bookshelf speaker for $5000 a pair?"
