How long is long???

I see a lot of contoversy about optical vs. coax for "long" distances. But how long is long? The typical connection length between equipment located in the same area is 2-5 ft. That's not "long".

I have the following problem. I want to connect an audio source (an audio music server, 5.1 surround) to an amplifier in another room. Both equipments have digital optical and analog coax (6xRCA) outlets. No digital coax. Moreover, the environment is noisy, and the cable runs close to EMI sources. So my initial decision was definitel to go optical. But the distance between the two sets is 80ft (that is "long" I guess, but I almost have to go around the building)!! And I don't find optical cables of more than 15ft.

What should I do? Can longer cables be made on special order? Where? And will it work?
