How important is timbre matching of the subwoofer with the satellites?
I bought a Athena Point 5 MK II system with the Athen AS-P300 subwoofer. Though the satellites are great, I am thinking of returning the subwoofer and replacing it with the Energy S8.3. Will that pose a 'timbre' problem? Or am I going to be fine if I replace the Athena subwoofer with one by a different speaker company.

That will not pose any timbre problems at all. The midrange and tweeters that produce mid to higher freq. are the ones that need to be matched.
