When I was younger, still living at home with my parents, I didn't really have a "real" HT. We had a vcr on a tv with a red LED display to show the channel, a pull knob to turn it on and some push buttons with numbers on it, and my parents thought that they had arrived. They would not let me replace it for them for the longest time. Not even when I found a free Sony Trinitron, twice the size! They made me give it back. Owell. They still have it, though they have finally bought another one to use in the main room. The old one stays downstairs now. They even have a DVD player now, just so they can watch the home movies of the grandkids I send to them.
In my room, I had an old hand-me-down quadrophonic receiver that an aged nieghbor had given me, with a tuner, and some rca inputs on the back for a quadrophonic turntable, a tape, and an auxiliary. I wish I could remember what brand and model it was. It was sure neat with it's red, green, and white lights that sometimes came on, and sometimes did not.
I had 4 smallish (1'X1') speakers that came with it with rca jacks on the end of the wires that I could plug into it that I placed around the room, acheiving pseudo-surround sound. Each speaker had it's own volume control slider. I thought it was such fun to wait until everyone had left the house, pop in Bon Jovi - Lay Your Hands on Me, and play the introduction as loud as I could until the windows shook! What a blast! It was not really a life changing experience, but it sure was a heckuva lotta fun.
Then I went to college and had to make do with a sony boombox for several years. It wasn't until earlier this year that my Wife suggested we get a stereo because she was sick of listening to her cd's throught the DVD player over the TV speakers! She wanted something that would last a long time, so I began to research, and I found this site during my search, and it helped me decide on my first setup. So that's when it started. Since then I have set out on my own Home Theater journey, learning what there is to know, and loving it! I am finding out so many new and fun things and am only limited by funds, and WAF. Oh yeah, and two rugrats.
Love em!
It has gotten me to pull out some of my old cd's that I have'nt listened to in years just to see how they sound on my setup. I don't get a lot of time to just sit and relax listening to it, because of family obligations, but those few minutes that I do get, I look forward to because I think I am becoming an audioholic... hehe!
