How does upconversion work and should I keep it?

I bought a Sony 42" LCD that I am very happy with along with a Sony upconverting DVD player. I am not sure what model. I am trying to track it down from Iraq. I will get it soon.

My question is what does upconverting do and are there really only two models that do it, or just two models at Best Buy that do it? You can fill in the blanks. I will be more educated for my next purchase.

I am open to replacement or whatever it takes to get the most out of my TV. I am going to make my purchases in November when I come home next.

Thanks for the help,

Can't say about what Best Buy has - sorry. There are MANY players that will upconvert.

The idea is that the player will in theory do a better job of deinterlacing and upscaling than the cheaper ones they put in some TVs. That's not always the case but it depends on the set and the player.

So would you say that upconversion is better than progressive scan? Or do they do different things?

thanks for the help,

They do different things. Put simply, interlaced and progressive scan are two different methods of updating the screen. Up-conversion is a merely a (very handy) convenience, but up-scaling increases the resolution of the source image (certain algorithms can actually make the increased resolution image actually contain more information than a simple linear scaling of the lower resolution image, making it look nicer).

Just want to get one thing straigh

I think I got it. But when you start talking about upscaling and interlacing I get lost. Are these just different terms for upconversion and progressive scan?

Not necessarily.

For example, if a player deinterlaces from 480i to 48p, that's just deinterlacing - converting to a progressive scan signal. If it goes from 480i to 720p, that's both deinterlacing AND upscaling. 480i to 1080i is just upscaling.

starting to get it.

Thanks for the explanation. I think the lightbulb is on now.

I am still waiting for my wife to get back from her trip before I find out the model number of my Sony DVD player. It wasn't too expensive (maybe $200). But I am considering a neuneo model hvd 2081, but I don't know if this is a good long term piece. Can you recommend one?

I was thinking about a mid-range Marantz or Denon receiver (also another topic). But because I will be upgrading everything I was wondering what to get. Does it just come down to what I like looking at or are there some must-have features to look for?

I would hold off on the 2081. They are quoting no more in stock, to make room for the new 2085. I have sent an email to see all of the differences between the 2. The web page claims a completely different circuit board revision.

The other logical choice is the Oppo.

Ok NeuNeo got back with me. And on the plus side, they always have gotten back with me within 24 hours.

Here is what was said in the email back to me.
2085 uses the same chipset, however we changed the design of the circuit board
and used better quality components and a different DVD loader in order to
improve the overall quality of this player. The new feature of 2085 is probably
it will output 1080P via HDMI output.

Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.

I have emailed Roy a few times, when I bought my 2081, and he gave me some firmware upgrades that are not on the site. With super details on how to update the dvd player. My opinion, I would buy from them again.

Thank you, Brian, for the info. I have emailed them too and got a quick response. I see that you are using the same brand and your recommendation to use them again is helpful.
